Shopify Plus vs Basic Shopify for Indian D2C brands (2026)
Shopify Plus costs roughly ₹1.9 lakh a month versus a few thousand for the standard plans — so the real question is not "which is better" but "does your revenue justify Plus yet." Here is the honest feature-by-feature and cost comparison for Indian D2C brands, and the threshold where Plus starts to pay for itself.
Here is the honest answer before the comparison table. Shopify Plus is not "better" than Basic Shopify — it is a different tier for a different stage. Plus costs roughly ₹1.9 lakh a month against a few thousand for the standard plans, so the real question is never "which is better," it is "does my revenue and my roadmap justify Plus yet." For most Indian D2C brands, the honest answer is not yet — and that is fine.
I build on both, from Delhi/NCR, for Indian D2C brands. This post is the comparison I give founders who ask whether they should be on Plus: what actually differs, what it costs in rupees, and the threshold where the maths flips. I have no incentive to push you onto Plus — a standard-plan build is a smaller project for me — so this is the version without the upsell.
What Shopify Plus and Basic Shopify have in common
Start here, because it is most of the picture. Both tiers share the same core: the same storefront rendering, the same Online Store 2.0 themes, the same checkout engine, the same app ecosystem, the same admin, the same hosting and security, the same 99.99% uptime SLA on the infrastructure. A shopper cannot tell whether a store runs on Basic or Plus. Your Core Web Vitals, your conversion rate, your design — none of those are gated behind Plus. They are functions of how well the store is built, on any plan.
That matters because founders often assume Plus will make their store faster or convert better. It will not. Those are execution problems, and you solve them with development, not with a plan upgrade.
What the standard Shopify plans cost
The standard plans, at roughly current pricing (always check Shopify's pricing page for live numbers — plans and India-specific rates change):
| Plan | Price (approx) | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | Launching, low order volume | |
| Shopify | Growing, needs better reporting | |
| Advanced | Higher volume, advanced reports, lower card rates |
Shopify also lists India-specific INR pricing that is typically lower than the straight USD conversion, so the real rupee cost is often less than the table above. The point stands: the standard tier is a few thousand rupees a month.
What Shopify Plus costs
Shopify Plus starts at about $2,300 per month billed annually — roughly ₹1.9 lakh a month, ₹23 lakh a year — with a variable revenue-based option for very high-volume merchants. See Shopify Plus for current terms. That is the platform fee only. On top of it sit apps, a development build, and payment processing.
So the gap is not marginal. Plus costs roughly 6x to 60x the standard plan's monthly fee. That is the number the rest of this decision has to justify.
Shopify Plus vs standard Shopify: what actually differs
| Capability | Standard Shopify | Shopify Plus |
|---|---|---|
| Storefront, themes, checkout engine | Yes | Yes (same) |
| Checkout customization | Limited | Full (Checkout Extensibility) |
| Shopify Functions (checkout/shipping/payment logic) | Basic | Advanced |
| Native B2B / wholesale channel | No | Yes |
| International storefronts (Markets) | Basic | Markets, expansion stores |
| Flow automation + Launchpad | Limited / no | Yes |
| Expansion stores under one contract | No | Up to 10 |
| Staff accounts | Capped | Up to ~100 |
| API rate limits | Standard | Much higher |
| Platform fee | ~₹3K–₹33K/mo | ~₹1.9 lakh/mo |
Read that table for the pattern: Plus does not add "better," it adds "more control and more channels." Custom checkout, native B2B, international expansion, operational automation, and headroom for volume. If none of those are on your roadmap in the next 12 months, you are paying ₹23 lakh a year for capacity you will not use.
The India-specific catch: payment fees
One thing the global Plus-vs-Basic comparisons miss for Indian brands. Shopify charges an extra platform fee when you do not use Shopify Payments — and Shopify Payments has had limited availability in India. So most Indian D2C brands route checkout through Razorpay, PayU, or Cashfree and pay that gateway's fee (typically up to ~2% plus GST) regardless of their Shopify plan.
The practical effect: the "lower transaction fees on Plus" benefit that matters so much for US brands is muted in India, because your real processing cost is set by your Indian gateway, not by your Shopify tier. Factor this out of the Plus business case if you are selling primarily in INR — it is often a wash.
So when does Plus actually pay for itself?
Two triggers, and you only need one:
- Revenue. At ₹23 lakh a year for the platform, Plus starts to pencil once you are doing roughly ₹12 crore or more in annual revenue (about ₹1 crore a month) — the point where the platform fee is a small single-digit-or-less percentage of GMV and the operational leverage pays back. Below that, the same budget does more for you spent on development, speed, and marketing.
- Capability. You need something only Plus provides — a customized checkout (bundles, upsells, custom fields at checkout), a genuine B2B channel alongside D2C, or international storefronts. If a Plus-only feature is load-bearing for your model, revenue is secondary; the capability justifies the upgrade earlier.

Where most Indian D2C brands actually sit
The target reader here — a D2C brand at ₹15 lakh to ₹1 crore a month — is, in almost every case, better served on Advanced Shopify with a strong custom build than on Plus. The money that would go to the Plus platform fee (₹23 lakh a year) buys a lot of development, performance work, CRO, and ad spend on a standard plan. Those move revenue now. Plus becomes the obvious call once you cross into eight-figure-monthly territory or hit a hard capability wall.

What's next
If you are weighing Plus against a standard-plan build and want an honest read on which your brand actually needs, the Shopify Plus developer page lays out what a Plus build includes and costs, and the Shopify developer in Delhi page covers the standard-plan build — both with named case studies (Mahina's +28% AOV, Bloom's +22% MoM revenue), transparent pricing, and a 30-minute call link. Send me your monthly revenue and what you are trying to build, and I will tell you plainly whether Plus is worth it for you yet.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Shopify Plus and Basic Shopify?
Basic and the standard Shopify plans give you a full storefront, checkout, and app ecosystem for a few thousand rupees a month. Shopify Plus is the enterprise tier — starting around $2,300 (roughly ₹1.9 lakh) a month — that unlocks checkout customization, higher-order Shopify Functions, native B2B and wholesale, Markets for international selling, Flow automation, up to 10 expansion stores, and far higher API limits. The storefront looks the same to a shopper; the difference is what you can build behind it and how much volume it handles. Is Shopify Plus worth it for an Indian D2C brand?
It depends entirely on revenue and needs. At roughly ₹1.9 lakh a month (₹23 lakh a year) for the platform alone, Plus makes sense once you are doing around ₹12 crore or more in annual revenue, or when you specifically need a Plus-only capability — custom checkout, a real B2B channel, or international storefronts. Below that, the same money is better spent on development, performance, and marketing on a standard plan. Most Indian D2C brands at ₹15 lakh to ₹1 crore a month do not need Plus yet.How much does Shopify Plus cost in India?
Shopify Plus starts at about $2,300 per month billed annually — roughly ₹1.9 lakh a month at current exchange rates — with a variable revenue-based option for very high-volume merchants. That is the platform fee only. On top of it you pay for apps, a development build, and payment processing. Standard Shopify plans, by contrast, run from roughly ₹2,000 to ₹30,000 a month depending on tier. Can Basic Shopify handle a growing D2C brand?
Yes, further than most founders expect. The standard Shopify and Advanced plans handle high traffic, large catalogs, and crores in annual revenue perfectly well. What they cap is specific capability — you cannot deeply customize the checkout, run native B2B, or spin up international expansion stores. A brand usually outgrows Basic Shopify on capability, not on raw volume, and that distinction is what tells you when to look at Plus. What can Shopify Plus do that Basic Shopify cannot?
Customize the checkout with Checkout Extensibility, run advanced Shopify Functions for checkout, shipping, and payment logic, sell B2B natively alongside D2C, launch international storefronts with Markets, automate operations with Flow and Launchpad, run up to 10 expansion stores under one contract, and access much higher API and staff-account limits. These are the capabilities that justify the price — if you actually need them.Does Shopify Plus reduce transaction fees in India?
Somewhat, but transaction fees are a bigger issue in India than the plan tier. Shopify charges an extra platform fee when you do not use Shopify Payments, and Shopify Payments has had limited availability in India, so most Indian brands route through Razorpay or another gateway and pay that gateway's fee (typically up to 2%) regardless of Shopify plan. Plus gets you better rates where Shopify Payments is available, but for many Indian brands the gateway fee is the same on Plus as on Basic.Should I start on Basic Shopify and upgrade to Plus later?
Almost always, yes. Start on a standard plan, build a fast and well-converting store, and upgrade to Plus when a specific need or your revenue makes the ₹1.9 lakh monthly fee an obvious yes. Migrating from standard Shopify to Plus is a smooth same-platform upgrade — far simpler than a cross-platform migration — so there is no penalty for waiting until Plus clearly earns its cost.
