Hire an offshore Shopify
without the horror story.

Offshore hiring goes wrong for three reasons, and none of them is the country: no written scope, money weighted upfront, and no IP assignment. Fix those and you get senior Shopify work at 50–70% below a US or UK agency. I am the developer, not a sales layer — you brief the person who writes the code.

01What actually goes wrong

Six red flags that predict every bad hire.

These are the signals worth walking away over — whoever you hire, including me. If a developer clears all six, the offshore arbitrage works in your favour.

A quote without a written scope

A price with no Definition of Done is not a price. It is the opening position in a negotiation you will lose halfway through the build.

Rates under ~$15/hour for “senior” work

That number only works with juniors, a template reskin, or resold hours. You are buying a rebuild in six months.

No IP assignment clause

Without it, ownership of your theme code is genuinely ambiguous. This is the single most commonly skipped clause in offshore contracts.

Most of the money due upfront

Milestones exist so both sides carry risk. A large upfront share moves all of it onto you.

Portfolio screenshots instead of live URLs

You cannot inspect a screenshot. Real work has a domain you can open and a theme you can read.

You never meet whoever writes the code

If the person on the call is not the person building, you are buying an org chart with a markup on top.

02Vetting

Five checks before you send any money.

01
Ask for live URLs

Three stores you can open today. Then open DevTools and read the theme code on one of them — it is a five-minute check that eliminates most candidates.

02
Ask what broke

Every real project has a failure. A senior answers with the specific incident and the fix; a reseller gets vague. This question sorts the field faster than any other.

03
Confirm who codes

In writing: who writes the code, who reviews it, who you talk to when it breaks at 2am your time. One name for all three is the answer you want.

04
Get scope in writing

A Definition of Done, a fixed price, a ship date, and an IP assignment clause — before any money moves.

05
Buy a paid trial

A $300–500 task with a real deadline. What you learn about communication and code quality is worth many times the cost.

The long version, with the exact questions to ask and the contract clauses that matter, is in how to hire an offshore Shopify developer without getting burned. For how the day-to-day actually runs across a 10-hour gap, see working with an offshore developer across time zones.

03The 10-hour gap

The time difference is the feature.

India runs 9.5–13.5 hours ahead of the US and 4.5–5.5 ahead of the UK. Handled badly that is a day lost per round trip. Handled well, you brief in your evening and review finished work in your morning — a full build cycle every 24 hours instead of every 48.

You brief in your evening

A written brief or a call in the overlap window — your early afternoon in the US, your afternoon in the UK.

I build overnight

Your night is my working day. Work lands on a staging URL you can click through.

You review in your morning

A daily written update waiting when you start, with what shipped and what is blocked.

Weekly call, always

One scheduled call a week in your time zone, so nothing drifts for more than five working days.

04Scope & price

What you can hand off, and what it costs.

Custom theme builds

A storefront coded against your brand and funnel — not a template reskin with your logo dropped in.

Platform migrations

WooCommerce, Squarespace, Wix, Magento and BigCommerce → Shopify with SEO-safe 301 mapping and zero data loss.

Shopify Plus

Functions, Flow, Wholesale and Markets for brands that have outgrown the Advanced plan ceiling.

Performance & CRO

Core Web Vitals and conversion work — the store loads fast on the connection your customers actually have.

Offshore, in numbers

Offshore Shopify hiring versus the alternatives

The saving comes from cost of living, not from cutting seniority. Here are the numbers and the three ways to buy Shopify work, compared.

What clients say

Brands in the US, UK and UAE who hired offshore.

Migrations are where we normally lose money — data loss, broken links, downtime. Tanuj moved us from Magento to Shopify with none of it. He built a redirect map to preserve our SEO, migrated every customer and order record, and rebuilt our subscription flow inside three months. Sales grew after the migration. He is the cool head in a hot mess of a migration.

We kept Tanuj on a monthly retainer because he actually moved our metrics. He did more than build a theme — he built the bundle logic that lifted our AOV, and reworked the checkout based on real data. While he was managing the site, our sales grew meaningfully. The retainer works because he stays with it until the numbers rise, not just until launch.

We chose Tanuj to own the page and the traffic together. Usually the CRO person does not care about the ads and the ads person does not care about the UX. Tanuj cared about both. He built the theme for our US expansion, ran the CRO tests, and directed the Meta ads team at the same time — so we could change the landing pages in step with ad performance.

We wanted a multi-reseller platform on a single Shopify backend, where every reseller has their own storefront, their own pricing and their own payouts. No off-the-shelf solution could give us that. Tanuj built the entire system from scratch — the storefronts and all of the backend logic behind them.

05FAQ

Straight answers, no hedging.

What is an offshore Shopify developer?

+

An offshore Shopify developer is a developer in a different country — usually one with a lower cost of living — who builds and maintains your Shopify store remotely. In practice it means hiring from India, Eastern Europe, or South East Asia instead of your local market, at 50–70% lower cost for the same seniority. The work is identical: themes, migrations, Shopify Plus, apps. What changes is the hourly rate, the time zone, and the fact that you have to do the vetting yourself rather than leaning on a local agency brand.

How much does an offshore Shopify developer cost?

+

Offshore senior Shopify rates run roughly $25–60 per hour, against $90–200+ per hour in the US and UK. On project terms that is $2,000–15,000 for a custom build and $1,000–3,000 per month on retainer, versus $20,000–80,000+ and $5,000–15,000 per month at a comparable US or UK agency. Rates below about $15 per hour are a warning sign, not a bargain — that is a price only sustainable with juniors, template reskins, or an agency reselling someone else’s hours.

Is it safe to hire an offshore Shopify developer?

+

Yes, when you hire a named senior operator on a written contract rather than the cheapest marketplace listing. Every offshore horror story has the same three ingredients: no written scope, payment weighted upfront, and no IP assignment. Fix those three and the risk drops to roughly what it is locally. The country was never the variable — the contract was.

How do I vet an offshore Shopify developer?

+

Ask for live store URLs you can open and inspect, not screenshots. Read the theme code on one of them. Ask what broke on their last project and how they handled it — evasion here is the strongest single signal. Confirm who actually writes the code, in writing. Then buy a small paid trial task, around $300–500, before committing to the full build. That trial tells you more than any interview, and it is the cheapest insurance in the process.

How does the time-zone difference work?

+

India is 9.5–13.5 hours ahead of US time zones and 4.5–5.5 hours ahead of the UK. I overlap a few hours with your working day for calls — your early afternoon in the US, your afternoon in the UK — and deliver work overnight. Most clients run a daily written update plus a weekly call and treat the gap as an advantage: you brief in your evening and review finished work in your morning. The store gets built while you sleep.

Will I own the code if I hire offshore?

+

You should, and with me you do. The service agreement assigns all code, theme files, and IP to you on final payment, and you receive the actual files and repository access at handover — not just a live store you cannot edit. This is the clause offshore hires most often skip. If a developer will not put IP assignment in writing, that alone is enough to walk.

How do I pay an offshore developer safely?

+

In USD against fixed milestones tied to deliverables you review — never a large lump sum upfront for undefined work. International bank transfer (SWIFT), Wise, or PayPal for smaller amounts all work. Exports of services from India are zero-rated for GST under a Letter of Undertaking, so no Indian tax is added to your invoice. A reasonable structure is a small deposit, then payments released as each milestone lands.

Offshore developer or offshore agency?

+

An offshore agency sells you a brand and staffs the work with whoever is free — usually a junior behind an account manager, which reintroduces the exact overhead you went offshore to avoid. A named senior operator is the person writing your code, and you can check their work before you hire. For most D2C builds the operator is the better trade; agencies make sense when you need several disciplines running in parallel.
