Shopify returns and exchange apps for D2C brands (2026): India and global options compared
Return Prime and EcoReturns fit Indian D2C with reverse pickup and COD refunds; Loop and AfterShip suit US-led brands. Push exchanges before refunds.

The short answer
- Return Prime, built in India, starts free (5 requests) and its paid plans run $19.99 to $149.99/mo plus a per-request overage.
- EcoReturns starts free for 20 returns a month; paid plans are $29, $99 and $299/mo.
- Loop's paid plans start at $155/mo, and its free tier covers US and Canada labels.
- AfterShip Returns costs $19/mo for 20 returns and $119/mo for 100, after a free shopper-funded option.
- Shopify's native self-serve returns let customers request returns from the order status page, and you can add exchange items when approving.
- For stores created after 12 May 2025, Shopify charges third-party transaction fees on the store-credit portion of an order.
Want this done rather than explained? a Shopify developer in Delhi NCR
For an Indian D2C brand, start with Return Prime or EcoReturns: both have free tiers, both handle exchanges and store credit, and Return Prime connects to Shiprocket for reverse pickups and COD refunds. Loop and AfterShip are stronger if most of your orders ship in the US or Canada. Whichever app you pick, set the flow up so exchanges come before refunds.
I'm Tanuj, a Shopify developer in New Delhi. I've shipped 62+ stores, a lot of them apparel and shapewear, where size returns come with the category. Returns get treated as an ops chore until someone adds up what refunds cost in a month. This post compares the apps I'd consider in 2026, with prices checked on the Shopify App Store, and explains how I'd set up an exchange-first flow for India.
Do you need a returns app at all?
Not on day one. Shopify has self-serve returns built in. Per the Help Center, customers can "request to return items that have been delivered, or cancel items that haven't shipped yet, from the same order status page." You approve in the admin, and when you approve "you can add exchange items, provide shipping instructions, and send return labels." Return rules set eligibility, the return window, and whether return shipping is free or paid.
Shopify can also issue store credit natively, including as a refund option, provided you're on the new customer accounts. One detail matters a lot for Indian stores: for stores created after 12 May 2025, Shopify says "orders that include store credit as a payment method are charged third-party transaction fees on the order amount paid for using store credit." Shopify Payments isn't available in India, so on Basic that's 2% of every rupee of credit spent. It isn't a reason to avoid store credit, but put it in your maths. The fee table by plan is on my Shopify pricing in India hub.
What the native flow doesn't give you in India: courier pickup booking, COD refund payouts, return reason analytics you can act on, or a branded portal that nudges people toward an exchange. Once you're handling more than a handful of returns a week, that gap costs more in staff time than an app does.
The returns apps I'd shortlist in 2026
Prices below are from each app's Shopify App Store listing, checked October 2026, in USD as billed.
| App | Built by | Free tier | Paid plans | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Return Prime | Appsdart Solutions (India) | 5 requests/mo | $19.99/mo (60), $79.99/mo (180), $149.99/mo (450+), plus per-request overage | Indian D2C on Shiprocket, COD-heavy |
| EcoReturns | Saara Inc (US) | 20 returns/mo | $29/mo (100), $99/mo (400), $299/mo (custom) | Indian and global brands wanting AI rules and fraud flags |
| AfterShip Returns | AfterShip | Shopper-funded Return Care | $19/mo (20), $119/mo (100), plus overage | Global brands shipping via USPS, UPS, FedEx, Canada Post |
| Loop | Loop | Checkout+ (US and Canada labels) | $155/mo, $340/mo | US-led brands at volume |
Some notes from the listings and vendor pages:
Return Prime is rated 4.8 from 770 reviews. It offers exchanges, store credit, refunds and replacements, rule-based auto-approval, and upsells during the return. The part that matters most in India is its Shiprocket integration: Return Prime's own page says it gives Shiprocket reverse orders a COD refund feature that sends the customer a Razorpay-powered payout link to enter bank or UPI details. If COD is a big share of your orders, that one feature removes a lot of manual work.
EcoReturns is rated 4.9 from 125 reviews, and its reviews include Indian apparel brands. It covers refunds, exchanges, store credit and labels, lists 200+ carrier and tool integrations, and markets AI tools to cut refunds and RTO. The free tier at 20 returns a month is the most generous of the four for a small brand.
AfterShip Returns is rated 4.7 from 1,543 reviews and is Built for Shopify. Its label generation names USPS, UPS, FedEx and Canada Post, so it fits brands shipping mostly abroad. Some reviews mention features held back for the higher tiers.
Loop is rated 4.6 from 443 reviews. The $340 Advanced plan carries the features people buy Loop for: Shop Now, instant exchanges and bonus credit. At these prices it makes sense for a brand doing serious US volume. I wouldn't put an India-first brand on it.
How should an exchange-first return flow work?
The goal is to keep the money in the store when the product was right and the size, colour or variant was wrong. Here's the order I set up for apparel clients:
- Ask the reason first. "Too small" and "too big" route to exchange. "Didn't like it" routes to store credit, with refund still available.
- Show the exchange option first. Pre-fill the next size up or down and show stock. If the size is sold out, offer a different colour or store credit.
- Sweeten credit over cash. A small bonus on store credit (some apps support this, Loop calls it bonus credit) often tips people who would otherwise take a refund.
- Keep refunds available and plain. Hiding the refund button makes people angry and costs you repeat purchases. Make it the second choice, not an invisible one.
- Free size swaps if margins allow. Charging for a size exchange on a product you sized badly mostly teaches people not to buy a second time.
A simple illustration (example numbers, not a client's): a brand gets 100 return requests a month on a ₹1,500 average order. If 30 of them convert to exchanges instead of refunds, ₹45,000 of revenue stays booked that month. That beats the price of any app on the list, and the customer usually ends up with a product that fits.
The flow fixes the symptom. The cause is usually on the product page: missing size charts, model measurements, fabric details. I cover that in Shopify product page CRO, and for category-specific notes see Shopify for fashion and apparel D2C in India.
How does reverse pickup work for Shopify stores in India?
Indian customers expect the brand to collect the parcel, the same way they expect a courier to deliver it. Asking someone to pack and drop a return at a courier office loses most exchanges before they start.
Shopify doesn't book Indian reverse pickups itself. You need a shipping partner with reverse logistics:
- Shiprocket processes returns as reverse shipments. You initiate the return and the item is picked up and delivered back to your address, subject to courier serviceability at the customer's pincode.
- Delhivery and other couriers support reverse pickups directly if you have an account with them, often through your OMS or WMS.
The returns app sits in front of this. The customer files a request in a branded portal, the app approves it under your rules, books the pickup with your aggregator, and issues the exchange, credit or refund once the item comes back or passes QC. I set up the forward side of this in Shopify fulfilment in India with Shiprocket, Delhivery and 3PL. Wire returns into the same stack rather than running them on email.
Two India-specific things to check before you pick an app:
- Pincode serviceability for reverse pickup. It isn't the same as forward delivery coverage. Check what share of your customers' pincodes your courier can pick up from.
- COD refunds. Decide whether you pay out to bank or UPI, issue store credit, or both. Return Prime's Razorpay payout link is one way to do it. Otherwise someone on your team ends up collecting account numbers over WhatsApp.
Returns aren't RTO, and the difference matters. RTO (return to origin) is a parcel that never got delivered, usually a refused COD order. A returns app doesn't fix that. RTO is a checkout and COD-confirmation problem, which I go into in why your Shopify checkout abandons in India.
What should you track once returns are running?
A returns app gives you return reasons in one place, which is the most useful data most brands never look at. Four numbers I'd put on a monthly review:
| Metric | Why it matters | What to do with it |
|---|---|---|
| Return rate by SKU | A few products usually cause most returns | Fix or drop the worst offenders |
| Return rate by size | Shows whether your size chart is wrong | Adjust the chart, add "runs small" notes |
| Exchange share of resolutions | Tells you if the exchange-first flow is working | Change the order of options or the credit bonus |
| Days from request to resolution | Slow refunds and swaps create support tickets and bad reviews | Tighten QC and pickup booking |
If one SKU has a return rate far above the rest of the catalogue, the fix is almost always on the product page or in the product itself, and no returns app will solve it. Feed the reason codes back to whoever writes product copy and whoever orders stock.
Set up a simple automation too. When a return is approved for a size reason, tag the order and the customer. With Shopify Flow you can then send that tag to your email tool and follow up with fit guidance before their next order. I have a few of these patterns in Shopify Flow automations for D2C.
What I'd do
Under about 20 returns a month: Shopify's native self-serve returns plus a clear size guide. Don't pay for an app yet.
Past that, for an India-first brand on Shiprocket: Return Prime's Grow plan at $19.99/mo or EcoReturns' $29/mo plan. Run the free tier of each for two weeks on real requests and pick the one your support person prefers. They'll be using it every day.
For a brand selling mostly into the US or Canada (I build for a few, like Bloom Bodysuits in Canada and Bug Beater Chairs in the US), I'd look at AfterShip first and Loop once volume justifies $155 to $340 a month.
Whichever you pick, the flow decides how much money you keep: exchange first, credit second, refund always available. If you want your returns flow, size guides and product pages set up together, tell me about your store and I'll send a fixed quote.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best Shopify returns app for D2C brands in India?
For most Indian D2C brands I'd shortlist Return Prime and EcoReturns. Return Prime is built by an Indian company, starts free for 5 requests a month and has a Shiprocket integration with COD refunds paid out through Razorpay links. EcoReturns starts free for 20 returns a month and has many Indian apparel brands among its reviewers. Trial both on your real return volume before choosing.Does Shopify have a built-in returns and exchange feature?
Yes. Shopify's self-serve returns let customers request a return or cancel unshipped items from the order status page. You approve or decline in the admin, and you can add exchange items, shipping instructions and return labels while approving. Return rules control eligibility and the return window. It covers basic needs well, but it lacks the reverse pickup and COD refund tooling Indian brands usually need. How do I offer reverse pickup for Shopify returns in India?
Shopify itself doesn't book Indian reverse pickups. You need a shipping aggregator or courier with reverse logistics, such as Shiprocket, which processes returns as reverse shipments picked up from the customer, or Delhivery directly. A returns app like Return Prime connects to Shiprocket so approved return requests create pickups without someone copying details across by hand. How do I refund a COD order on Shopify in India?
A COD customer paid cash, so there's no card or UPI transaction to reverse. You need their bank or UPI details and a payout. Return Prime handles this for Shiprocket reverse orders with a Razorpay-powered payout link the customer fills in. Store credit is the other route, and it keeps the money in your store, which is why I push exchanges and credit first. Are exchanges better than refunds for a D2C brand?
For most apparel and footwear brands, yes. A size exchange keeps the revenue and usually keeps the customer, while a refund loses both and still costs you two shipping legs. Put exchange and store credit first in the return flow, make the refund option available but not the default, and offer a free size swap if your margins allow it.How much does Loop Returns cost?
As listed on the Shopify App Store in October 2026, Loop has a free Checkout+ tier that includes returns software and US and Canada labels, an Essential plan at $155/mo and an Advanced plan at $340/mo, which adds Shop Now, instant exchanges and bonus credit. It's built around US and Canada shipping, so it suits brands with most orders in North America.Does Shopify charge transaction fees on store credit?
For stores created after 12 May 2025, Shopify's Help Center says orders that include store credit as a payment method are charged third-party transaction fees on the amount paid with store credit. Indian stores use third-party gateways, so on Basic that's 2% of the credit portion. Older stores aren't affected by that rule. Check your store's creation date.
