Shopify Horizon vs Dawn: should you switch themes in 2026?
Start new stores on Horizon. Keep a working Dawn store until your next redesign: Dawn is still updated, and switching means setting the theme up again.

The short answer
- Shopify announced Horizon on 21 May 2025 in the Summer '25 Edition as a collection of 10 free themes built with theme blocks.
- The Horizon collection on the Theme Store lists 10 free themes: Horizon, Savor, Heritage, Ritual, Pitch, Dwell, Vessel, Atelier, Fabric and Tinker.
- Dawn is still maintained: its Theme Store listing shows version 16.1.0 released on 9 October 2026, the same day as Horizon 4.3.0.
- Between July 2025 and October 2026 Shopify pushed more than 20 Horizon versions to GitHub, including major versions 3.0 (October 2025) and 4.0 (June 2026).
- Since 10 December 2025, AI block generation powered by Sidekick works with every Theme Store theme, not only Horizon themes.
- Switching themes does not carry over section settings, global theme settings, wording, templates or code customizations; products, collections, menus and pages stay.

Start new Shopify stores on Horizon. If your store already runs on Dawn and it works, keep it until your next redesign. Dawn is still maintained (version 16.1.0 shipped on 9 October 2026), while Horizon gets new features faster and is built on theme blocks. Switching from Dawn to Horizon means installing a new theme, so settings, sections, templates, custom code and app setups all have to be redone.
It's a question I hear a lot from Dawn stores. The honest answer depends less on which theme is better and more on what a switch actually costs you.
What is Shopify Horizon?
Horizon is a free Shopify theme, and also the name of a family of 10 free themes, announced on 21 May 2025 in Shopify's Summer '25 Edition. It was built around theme blocks, which let you nest and rearrange content inside sections in the theme editor without code.
Shopify's announcement described Horizon as a theme foundation with 10 presets and 30+ content block options. Today the "Horizon themes" collection on the Theme Store lists 10 free themes that share that foundation:
| Horizon family theme | Price |
|---|---|
| Horizon | Free |
| Savor | Free |
| Heritage | Free |
| Ritual | Free |
| Pitch | Free |
| Dwell | Free |
| Vessel | Free |
| Atelier | Free |
| Fabric | Free |
| Tinker | Free |
The other big Summer '25 feature was AI block generation. You describe a block in plain words and Shopify writes the code. Shopify's changelog says that since 10 December 2025 this works with every Theme Store theme, not just Horizon. Per Shopify's help page, the generated file is saved to your theme's blocks folder, it isn't available on the Starter plan or vintage themes, and Shopify Support won't troubleshoot AI-generated block code. Shopify also says plainly that generated code may have errors or miss accessibility and performance best practices, so review it like any other code.
What are theme blocks, and why do they matter?
Theme blocks are blocks defined once at the theme level and reused across sections, and they can contain other blocks. Dawn's blocks are defined inside each section's own schema, so a block built for one section can't be used in another.
In practice that changes who can do what:
- In Dawn, if you want a new layout inside a section, say an image, a heading and two buttons arranged differently, a developer usually edits the section's code.
- In Horizon, many of those layouts can be built in the editor by nesting existing blocks inside a group block.
You can see the difference in the source code. Horizon's public repository has a blocks folder with 95 block files as of version 4.3.0. Dawn's repository has no blocks folder at all. Shopify's developer docs add one rule worth knowing: a section can either define its own local blocks or accept theme blocks, not both. That's why you can't simply drop Horizon's blocks into Dawn.
Is Dawn still supported?
Yes. Dawn is still on the Theme Store and still gets updates. Its listing shows version 16.1.0, released on 9 October 2026, the same day as Horizon 4.3.0. Shopify hasn't announced an end date.
Dawn's 2026 releases were substantial, not just bug fixes:
- 15.5.0 (June 2026) added support for standard storefront events, including app, agent and AI cart interactions without page reloads, plus a product disclosures section and block.
- 16.0.0 (August 2026) switched the header to Shopify's customer account experience and removed the legacy customer account templates.
- 16.1.0 (October 2026) shows product disclosures only to buyers in the jurisdictions they apply to.
The difference is pace. Horizon pushed more than 20 versions to its public GitHub repository between July 2025 and October 2026, including two major versions: 3.0 in October 2025 and 4.0 in June 2026. Dawn released four versions in the year to October 2026. If you want the newest editor features first, that's Horizon. If you want a theme that changes less often, that's Dawn.
Horizon vs Dawn: how do they compare?
Here's the side-by-side, based on Shopify's Theme Store listings, the public source code and Shopify's docs as of October 2026.
| Horizon | Dawn | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free | Free |
| Launched | May 2025 (Summer '25 Edition) | June 2021 (with Online Store 2.0) |
| Block model | Theme blocks, reusable and nestable | Section blocks, defined per section |
| Editor flexibility | Build many layouts by nesting blocks | Layout changes often need code |
| AI block generation | Yes | Yes, since December 2025 |
| Theme Store features listed | Adds slide-out cart, quick view, infinite scroll, recently viewed, stock counter, back-in-stock alert, pre-order | Core set: filtering, mega menu, quick buy, swatches, cart notes, pickup |
| Speed | Built lean by Shopify; test with your content | Built lean by Shopify; test with your content |
| App compatibility | App blocks and embeds work; code-injected apps need setup | Widely supported; years of app docs written for it |
| Update cadence | More than 20 versions since July 2025 | 4 versions in the last year |
| Family of looks | 10 themes on one foundation | One theme, one preset |
| Effort to adopt | New theme install and setup | None if you're already on it |
A note on speed, because people ask. There's no official Shopify benchmark comparing the two. Both READMEs list the same principles: server-rendered Liquid, JavaScript only as needed, and lean defaults. Horizon 4.3.0's release notes mention improving first paint by no longer preloading theme fonts. In my experience the base theme matters far less than your images, apps and custom scripts. If speed is the reason you're switching, measure first. My post on why Shopify stores get slow covers what actually moves the score.
Who should switch to Horizon, and who should wait?
Switch when you're redesigning anyway or starting fresh. Wait when Dawn is working and the switch would just be a cost.
| Your situation | My recommendation |
|---|---|
| Launching a new store | Start on Horizon or a Horizon family theme |
| Planning a redesign in the next few months | Do the redesign on Horizon |
| Your team wants to build layouts without a developer | Horizon is worth the switch |
| Dawn store, lightly customized, converting well | Stay on Dawn and keep it updated |
| Dawn store with heavy custom code that works | Stay, and plan the move into your next rebuild |
| Running a big sale or launch soon | Wait until after it |
| Key apps don't support Horizon yet | Wait, or replace those apps first |
The question I ask clients is simple: what will Horizon let you do next quarter that Dawn won't? If the answer is "build landing pages without waiting for me", that's a real reason. If the answer is "it's newer", it isn't.
Mahina, the Gurgaon period care brand I built for, is a good example of Dawn done well. We turned their Figma designs into custom sections on a Dawn base, the store held a 95+ speed score, and AOV went up 28%. A store like that has no reason to switch until it's due a redesign.
If you want a second opinion on your own store, send me the details and I'll tell you whether a switch is worth it.
What does switching from Dawn to Horizon involve?
Switching is installing a new theme, not updating your current one. Shopify's help page is clear about what stays and what doesn't when you change themes.
Your products, collections, menus, pages and blog posts stay, because they live in the admin. These have to be set up again on the new theme:
- Section and block settings
- Global theme settings, such as colours and fonts
- Text and wording changes
- Templates
- Code customizations, including those added by apps
The steps I follow:
- Audit the current store. List every custom section, snippet, script and app that touches the theme. A diff against a clean copy of Dawn shows every code change.
- Decide what to keep. Some custom Dawn work becomes unnecessary because Horizon does it in the editor. Some needs rebuilding as a theme block.
- Install Horizon as a draft. Your live store keeps running on Dawn. Your library holds up to 20 themes on Basic, Grow and Advanced and 100 on Plus.
- Rebuild templates for home, product, collection, cart, pages and blog in the editor.
- Port custom code into new blocks or sections. Keep it in its own files so future Horizon updates stay easy.
- Reconnect every app. Add app blocks and embeds again, then check that reviews, subscriptions, upsells, pixels and WhatsApp widgets all work.
- Check SEO details. Product and article structured data, heading structure, image alt text and any custom meta tags you added to Dawn's code.
- Test on a phone on mobile data, share preview links with your team (Shopify's visitor preview links expire after 2 days), then publish in a quiet hour. Dawn stays in your library as a draft, so rollback is one click.
On cost, the theme is free and the work is the bill. A lightly customized store usually prices like a visual refresh, which I put at ₹40,000 to ₹1,50,000 in my redesign cost breakdown. If several custom sections need rebuilding as blocks, it moves toward a partial rebuild at ₹1,50,000 to ₹4,00,000.
What should you do if you stay on Dawn?
Keep it updated. A Dawn store three major versions behind is harder to update than one that takes each release as it comes, and features like customer accounts and product disclosures arrive through theme versions.
- Update once or twice a year using the draft-copy method. I wrote up the full process in how to update your Shopify theme without losing customizations.
- Read the release notes first. Dawn 16.0.0 required stores on legacy customer accounts to upgrade before publishing it.
- Keep custom code in its own files so updates carry it over cleanly.
- Use AI block generation carefully. It works on Dawn now, but review the code before you keep it.
What I'd do
For a new store, I'd start on Horizon or whichever Horizon family theme is closest to the brand, and keep custom work in theme blocks from day one.
For an existing Dawn store, I'd leave it alone if it's current, fast and converting. I'd fold the Horizon move into the next redesign, when you're paying to rebuild templates anyway. The exception is a team that keeps waiting on a developer for simple layout changes. Horizon's blocks can pay for the switch in saved developer time.
Either way, I'd measure before and after: speed on real phones, conversion rate and add-to-cart rate for two weeks each side.
If you're weighing a switch and want a fixed quote that covers templates, custom code and apps, tell me about your store. For broader questions, the contact page works too.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is Shopify's Dawn theme still supported in 2026?
Yes. Dawn is still on the Shopify Theme Store and still receives updates. Its listing shows version 16.1.0 released on 9 October 2026, and version 16.0.0 in August 2026 moved the header to Shopify's customer accounts. Shopify has not announced an end date for Dawn. New design features are arriving faster in Horizon, though, so Dawn is the stable choice rather than the one getting the most new tools. What is the Shopify Horizon theme?
Horizon is a free Shopify theme, and the name of a collection of 10 free themes, announced on 21 May 2025 in the Summer '25 Edition. It is built on theme blocks, reusable blocks that can be nested and placed in any section that accepts them. The collection includes Horizon, Savor, Heritage, Ritual, Pitch, Dwell, Vessel, Atelier, Fabric and Tinker, all sharing the same block-based foundation.Should I switch my Shopify store from Dawn to Horizon?
Only if you are already planning a redesign or Dawn is blocking something you need. Switching is installing a new theme, so section settings, templates, wording and custom code all have to be set up again and every app re-checked. If your Dawn store converts well and is up to date, keep it and switch when the next redesign is due. New stores should start on Horizon. Is Horizon faster than Dawn?
There is no official Shopify benchmark comparing them. Both are built by Shopify on the same principles: server-rendered Liquid, JavaScript only where needed, and lean defaults. Real-world speed depends far more on your images, apps and custom code than on the base theme. Run PageSpeed Insights on a Horizon preview with your own content and apps before you decide. Can I use AI block generation on Dawn?
Shopify's changelog says that since 10 December 2025, AI block generation powered by Sidekick works with every Shopify Theme Store theme, not just Horizon themes. It is not available on the Starter plan or on vintage themes. Shopify warns that generated code may have errors or miss accessibility and performance best practices, so review and test every generated block before keeping it.Will my apps work on Horizon?
Apps that use app blocks or app embeds generally work, because Horizon's sections and blocks accept app blocks. Apps that pasted code into Dawn's theme files, or that style Dawn's specific class names, will not carry over and need setting up again. Before switching, list every app touching your theme and check each vendor's Horizon support page. How much does it cost to switch from Dawn to Horizon?
The theme is free. The cost is the setup work. A lightly customized store can move in a few days, and in India that sits in the same range as a visual refresh, roughly ₹40,000 to ₹1,50,000. If custom sections need rebuilding as theme blocks, it is closer to a partial rebuild at ₹1,50,000 to ₹4,00,000, depending on how much custom work exists.
