WooCommerce to Shopify migration in India: cost, timeline & what breaks

A WooCommerce to Shopify migration for an Indian D2C brand runs roughly ₹1,25,000 to ₹4,00,000 and takes three to six weeks — but the cost is not the risk. The risk is what breaks: SEO rankings, subscription logic, and the India-specific payment and COD setup. Here is the full sequence and what to protect.

Here is the honest framing before the steps. A WooCommerce to Shopify migration is not risky because of the price — at ₹1,25,000 to ₹4,00,000 for most Indian D2C stores, the budget is the predictable part. It is risky because of what breaks if you rush it: your SEO rankings, your subscription billing, and the India-specific payment and cash-on-delivery setup that no generic migration guide even mentions. Get those three right and the migration is smooth. Miss one and you find out in lost revenue.

I do WooCommerce and Magento migrations to Shopify from Delhi/NCR, and the India-specific reconnection — Razorpay, COD, Shiprocket — is where I spend the care that overseas guides never cover. This post is the full sequence, the real cost and timeline, and exactly what to protect.

Why brands leave WooCommerce for Shopify

Not to start a platform war — both are good tools. But the pattern for growing Indian D2C brands is consistent. WooCommerce gives you total control and low platform fees, and charges you back in maintenance: you own the hosting, the security patching, the plugin updates, and the performance tuning. As the catalog and traffic grow, so does the surface area for a plugin conflict to break checkout at the worst moment.

Shopify takes that burden away — hosting, security, uptime, and a checkout that converts well by default — in exchange for platform fees and less low-level control. For most brands past the early stage, that trade favors Shopify. If you are still deciding, this post assumes you have decided; it is about doing the move well.

What it costs and how long it takes

FactorSimple storeComplex store
CatalogSmall, few variantsLarge, many variants/metafields
Plugins to replace2–36+ (subscriptions, B2B, custom)
ThemeLight rebuildFull custom rebuild
Cost (INR)~₹1,25,000~₹4,00,000
Timeline~3 weeks~5–6 weeks

That WooCommerce → Shopify band (₹1,25,000 – ₹4,00,000 / $1,500 – $4,800) is published on the pricing page alongside the other migration paths. The number moves on catalog size, plugin replacement, subscriptions, and how much the theme is rebuilt versus ported.

The three things that actually break

Product and customer data migrate cleanly with the right tools. These three do not migrate themselves, and they are where migrations go wrong:

1. URLs and SEO

WooCommerce and Shopify use different URL structures. Woo's /product/ and /shop/ paths do not exist on Shopify, which forces /products/ and /collections/. Every old URL needs a 301 redirect to its new home, or you drop the ranking equity you spent years building. Google is explicit that 301 redirects pass ranking signals — a complete redirect map is the single most important SEO step in the whole migration. A small, temporary dip during reindexing is normal; a lasting loss means the redirect map was incomplete.

2. Plugin-dependent functionality

Every WooCommerce plugin doing real work — subscriptions, reviews, wishlists, bundles, COD logic — has no automatic Shopify equivalent. Each needs a Shopify app or custom code, and the data behind it needs porting. Subscriptions are the most delicate: active subscribers must move to a Shopify subscription app with billing tokens re-established, or you drop revenue and annoy customers. Inventory this early — it is the part that most often gets underestimated.

3. The India-specific setup

This is the section generic guides skip and Indian stores cannot. On Shopify in India you must reconnect:

  • The payment gateway — Razorpay, PayU, or Cashfree, since Shopify Payments has limited India availability.
  • Cash-on-delivery — including any partial-payment, OTP-verification, or COD-restriction logic your brand runs. COD is a huge share of Indian D2C orders and it does not configure itself.
  • Shipping and couriers — Shiprocket, Delhivery, or your aggregator, with serviceability and rate logic.

Skip or rush this and you launch a store that technically works but cannot take the payment method half your customers use.

The migration sequence

The seven steps, in order:

  1. Audit the WooCommerce store — every product, order, customer, URL, and working plugin.
  2. Build the 301 redirect map — old URL to new URL, everything, before launch.
  3. Migrate products, customers, and orders — validated against the audit, no silent drops.
  4. Rebuild the theme on Online Store 2.0 — carry the brand, fix the old performance and structure problems; do not clone the Woo theme.
  5. Reconnect India payments and COD — gateway, cash-on-delivery, couriers.
  6. Port subscriptions and integrations — subscription billing tokens, Klaviyo/WhatsApp, reviews, analytics.
  7. Test, launch, and monitor — full COD and gateway QA, submit the sitemap, watch Search Console for 8–12 weeks.

For the platform-agnostic version of this checklist with the redirect and data-model detail, see the Shopify migration checklist for Indian D2C brands.

Should you redesign while you migrate?

Usually yes. You are already rebuilding the theme on Shopify, so fixing the old store's speed, structure, and conversion problems in the same project costs little extra and saves a second engagement later. The one rule: keep the URL structure and content intact for SEO even as the design changes. Redesign the pixels, preserve the addresses.

What's next

If you are moving off WooCommerce and want the India-specific parts — payment, COD, couriers, subscriptions — handled by someone who has done it rather than learned it on your store, the Shopify migration expert page covers migration engagements with SEO-safe redirect mapping, zero-data-loss guarantees, transparent pricing, and named case studies (including a Magento → Shopify Plus move with zero day-one indexation drop), plus a 30-minute call link. Send me your WooCommerce store URL and plugin list and I will scope the migration and flag what will break before we start.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

  • How much does it cost to migrate from WooCommerce to Shopify in India?

For an Indian D2C brand, a WooCommerce to Shopify migration typically runs ₹1,25,000 to ₹4,00,000 (about $1,500 to $4,800), depending on catalog size, how many plugins need Shopify equivalents, whether subscriptions are involved, and how much the theme is rebuilt versus ported. Plugin-heavy Woo stores with subscriptions and complex checkouts sit at the higher end.
  • How long does a WooCommerce to Shopify migration take?

Three to six weeks for most Indian D2C stores. A straightforward catalog with a clean redirect map can be done in three; a large catalog with subscriptions, custom functionality, and heavy plugin replacement takes five to six. The timeline is driven by complexity and content volume, not by the platform switch itself.
  • Will I lose SEO rankings moving from WooCommerce to Shopify?

You will see a small, temporary dip during reindexing — that is normal for any migration and Google says as much. What prevents a real, lasting loss is a complete 301 redirect map from every old WooCommerce URL to its new Shopify URL, preserved title tags and content, and a resubmitted sitemap. A migration that skips the redirect map is where rankings actually get lost.
  • What breaks when you migrate from WooCommerce to Shopify?

The three things that break most often are URLs (different structure — needs a full redirect map), plugin-dependent functionality (WooCommerce plugins have no automatic Shopify equivalent — each needs a Shopify app or custom code), and the India-specific setup (payment gateway, cash-on- delivery, and courier integration all have to be rebuilt). Product and customer data migrate cleanly; functionality and URLs are the risk.
  • Can I move my WooCommerce subscriptions to Shopify?

Yes, but it needs care. Active subscriptions migrate to a Shopify subscription app, and the billing tokens have to be re-established so subscribers are not dropped or double-charged. This is one of the most delicate parts of a WooCommerce migration and a reason not to attempt a subscription store move without someone who has done it before.
  • Is Shopify better than WooCommerce for an Indian D2C brand?

For most Indian D2C brands, yes — Shopify removes the hosting, security, and plugin-maintenance burden that WooCommerce puts on you, and its checkout converts well out of the box. WooCommerce offers more raw control and lower platform fees but costs you in maintenance, performance tuning, and the constant risk of a plugin conflict taking down checkout. The trade is control for reliability, and most growing brands want reliability.
  • Should I redesign my store during the WooCommerce to Shopify migration?

Usually yes — it is the most efficient time to do it. You are already rebuilding the theme on Shopify's Online Store 2.0, so carrying the brand across while fixing the old store's performance, structure, and conversion problems costs little extra and avoids a second project later. Just keep the URL structure and content intact for SEO even as the design changes.
