COD verification on Shopify India: OTP, WhatsApp confirmation and RTO apps (2026)

Shopify's built-in COD has no verification. Add an app for OTP or WhatsApp confirmation, pincode rules and partial COD. Most are free to install in 2026.

COD verification on Shopify India: OTP, WhatsApp confirmation and RTO apps (2026)

The short answer

  • Shopify charges no third-party transaction fee on manual payment methods like COD, while prepaid gateway orders carry 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced.
  • Shopify's built-in Cash on Delivery has no OTP, confirmation or pincode rules; COD orders arrive unpaid and you mark them paid by hand.
  • COD King, the most-reviewed COD OTP app checked (4.9 stars, 960 reviews), is free to install with Indian SMS at ₹1 per message on the free plan, as of Oct 2026.
  • Payment customization apps built on Shopify Functions, which hide COD by pincode or cart value, work on Basic and above; custom Functions apps need Shopify Plus.
  • On a ₹1,200 prepaid order on Basic, Razorpay's 2% + 18% GST and Shopify's 2% fee total about ₹52; the same order on COD pays neither.

Shopify's built-in Cash on Delivery takes the order and does nothing else: no OTP, no confirmation, no pincode rules. To verify COD orders in India you add an app that sends an OTP or a WhatsApp confirmation, checks the address, hides COD on risky pincodes and can ask for a small advance (partial COD). Most of these apps are free to install and charge per message or per order.

I'm writing this because "COD verification" and "prepaid order share" keep showing up in the search queries that reach my site. Behind both is the same worry: COD orders that get refused at the door, and the RTO (return to origin) shipping you pay on the way back.

If you're still adding up what Shopify itself costs, see my Shopify pricing in India hub first.

What does Shopify's built-in COD do?

You switch it on in Settings, Payments, under manual payment methods, by picking Cash on Delivery (COD). Per Shopify's help docs, those orders arrive marked unpaid, and once the courier remits the cash you mark each order as paid.

One detail Indian founders often miss: Shopify says "You aren't charged third-party transaction fees for manual payments." Shopify Payments isn't available in India, so every prepaid order through Razorpay, PayU or Cashfree carries Shopify's third-party fee on top of the gateway's own fee. COD orders don't.

Order typeShopify third-party fee (Basic)Gateway feeOther cost
Prepaid via Razorpay2%2% + 18% GST on the feeNone at the door
COD0%NoneCourier COD charge, RTO shipping if refused

So COD can look cheaper per order. It stops being cheaper the moment a parcel comes back, because you've paid shipping twice and earned nothing.

Why verify COD orders at all?

Unverified COD invites three kinds of order that never convert:

  • Fake or wrong numbers. The courier can't reach the buyer, and the parcel returns.
  • Impulse orders. Someone taps "Place order" at 1 a.m. and has changed their mind by the time the delivery agent calls.
  • Bad addresses. Missing landmark, wrong pincode, half an address. The courier tries, fails and returns it.

Each method below targets one of these. None of them fixes a product that disappoints at the door, and nothing here replaces a clear product page and honest delivery times.

Which COD verification methods work?

MethodWhen it runsWhat it catchesTrade-off
OTP at checkout (SMS or WhatsApp)Before the order existsFake and mistyped numbersAdds a step; some genuine buyers drop off
WhatsApp confirmationAfter the orderImpulse orders, wrong addressesNeeds a follow-up rule for no reply
IVR callAfter the orderSame as WhatsApp, for buyers who don't use itCall costs; some people ignore calls
Address validationAt checkoutIncomplete addresses, wrong pincodesDepends on the app's address data
Pincode and cart-value rulesAt checkoutAreas and order sizes that refuse oftenYou lose some good orders in those areas
Partial COD (advance)At checkoutLow-intent buyersExtra gateway fee on the advance
COD feeAt checkoutNudges buyers to prepaidCan lower conversion if set too high

My usual stack for a new D2C store: WhatsApp confirmation on every COD order, OTP only for first-time COD buyers, and pincode rules once there's a few months of RTO data to base them on. Partial COD comes in for high-value products where one refused parcel wipes out the margin on several good orders.

How do pincode and COD rules work on Shopify?

Shopify can't do this from settings. You need a payment customization app built on Shopify Functions, which can hide, rename or reorder payment methods at checkout based on conditions like pincode, cart value or product.

Shopify's checkout docs set the plan rules:

  • Public apps built with Shopify Functions work on Basic and above.
  • Custom apps built with Shopify Functions (written for your store alone) need Shopify Plus.

For most Indian stores that means picking a public app with good rules, and almost every COD app below includes them. On Plus, a custom function makes sense when the logic is specific, such as hiding COD for a product line that's always made to order.

Which COD verification apps should you look at?

I checked these listings on the Shopify App Store in October 2026. Ratings and prices are from the listings and change often.

AppRating (reviews)PricingMain features
COD King ‑ Part COD & OTP Verify4.9 (960)Free plan (SMS ₹1 each); Pro $9.99/mo (₹0.85/SMS); Enterprise $39/mo; Enterprise Plus $59/mo (₹0.40/SMS)OTP by SMS or WhatsApp, partial COD, COD fees, rules by location, cart value and product
Hillteck: Verify COD Orders4.9 (157)Free to install, usage charges applyIVR calls, WhatsApp and OTP confirmation, labels on confirmed or cancelled orders, address validation, COD-to-prepaid incentives
Cashfree CODFIRM4.6 (49)Free at $0.02 per COD order under 100 orders/mo; Pro $5/mo, Premium $9.99/mo, Enterprise $50/mo, plus per-order feesOTP, RTO risk scoring, hide COD by pincode, product, order value and high-RTO customers, address prefill, one-click checkout
COD Partial Payment, OTP & Fee (ByteInfy)5.0 (4)Free with 0.99% on partial-payment orders; Pro $7.33/mo (0.49%); Enterprise $17.81/mo (0.2%); SMS ₹0.50 to ₹0.906-digit SMS OTP, partial payments, COD blocking by pincode and cart value, risk signals

How I'd choose:

  • COD King if you want one app that covers OTP, partial COD, a COD fee and rules. It has by far the most reviews here.
  • Hillteck if your main problem is intent after the order and you want IVR calls alongside WhatsApp.
  • Cashfree CODFIRM if you want risk scoring and are open to replacing parts of checkout with its one-click flow.
  • ByteInfy only if partial payments are the main feature you need. Four reviews is too few for me to call it proven.

Don't stack two of these. Two apps both trying to run OTP and hide payment methods at checkout will fight, and you don't want to be debugging that in the middle of a Diwali sale.

How does WhatsApp confirmation fit with WhatsApp commerce?

If you already use WhatsApp for support or cart recovery, COD confirmation is the easiest message to add, because customers are expecting a message about their order. Hillteck and COD King both send confirmation over WhatsApp, and dedicated WhatsApp tools can do it too.

The one WhatsApp project in my own work that's relevant is Lilliput, a kidswear brand with over 20 years behind it, where I built WhatsApp ordering because that's how their customers already liked to buy. A confirmation message works for the same reason: it reaches people where they already talk to the brand. If you're weighing the bigger WhatsApp setup, I cover tools and costs in WhatsApp commerce on Shopify in India.

Two rules I'd set on any confirmation flow:

  1. Decide what happens with no reply. Hold for 24 hours, send one reminder, then follow a fixed rule (ship, call or cancel). Don't leave it to whoever is packing that day.
  2. Offer prepaid in the confirmation. A "pay now and get it faster" link in the confirmation message is the softest prepaid nudge there is.

What does COD actually cost compared with prepaid?

A worked example. These are my assumptions, so swap in your own numbers:

  • Order value ₹1,200, Shopify Basic plan, Razorpay standard pricing (2% + 18% GST on the fee)
  • Forward shipping ₹70 and return shipping ₹70 (check your courier's rate card; I'm not quoting a specific courier)
  • Courier COD charge: use your own rate card; I've left it as "C" below
ScenarioShopify feeGateway feeShippingTotal cost to you
Prepaid, delivered₹24.00₹28.32₹70₹122.32
COD, delivered₹0₹0₹70 + C₹70 + C
COD, refused (RTO)₹0₹0₹140 + C (if charged on RTO)₹140 + C, and no sale

A delivered COD order really is cheaper than prepaid here. The problem is the third row. Every refused parcel costs at least ₹140 with no revenue, plus the ad spend that brought the customer in. Verification earns its keep by turning third-row orders into either second-row orders or orders that never get placed.

For the gateway side of this maths, see Shopify transaction fees in India.

How do I find my prepaid vs COD order share?

Export orders from the Orders page as CSV and pivot by payment method, month by month. Compare it with RTO by payment method from your courier or aggregator panel. I'd look at three numbers every month:

  1. COD share of orders
  2. RTO rate on COD orders
  3. RTO rate on prepaid orders (it's usually small, but not zero)

If COD share falls after you add a COD fee or a prepaid discount but RTO on the remaining COD orders stays the same, the nudge worked on buyers who were going to accept anyway. If COD RTO drops after verification, the verification is doing its job.

What I'd do this week

  1. Pull last quarter's orders and RTO by payment method. You need a baseline before any app goes in.
  2. Install one COD app (COD King for most stores) and turn on WhatsApp or SMS OTP for first-time COD buyers only.
  3. Add a confirmation message on every COD order with a prepaid link inside it.
  4. After 30 days, look at RTO by pincode and add COD rules for the worst areas.
  5. Try partial COD only on products where a single RTO wipes out your margin.

Then compare the same three numbers again.

Want help setting this up?

COD verification, gateway setup and checkout rules are a regular part of the Indian D2C work I do. If RTO is eating your margin, tell me about your store on the intake form with your monthly orders, COD share and courier, and I'll tell you where I'd start.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

  • How do I verify COD orders on Shopify in India?

Shopify's built-in Cash on Delivery has no verification step, so you add an app. The common methods are an OTP sent by SMS or WhatsApp at checkout, a WhatsApp or IVR confirmation message after the order is placed, and address validation. Apps like COD King, Hillteck Verify COD Orders and Cashfree CODFIRM do this and tag orders as confirmed or cancelled so your team only ships the confirmed ones.
  • Can I restrict COD by pincode on Shopify?

Not with Shopify's settings alone. You need a payment customization app built on Shopify Functions, which can hide COD by pincode, cart value, product or customer. Shopify says public Functions apps work on Basic and above, while custom Functions apps you build yourself need Shopify Plus. Many COD apps, including COD King, CODFIRM and ByteInfy, include pincode and cart-value rules.
  • What is partial COD and does it reduce RTO?

Partial COD means the customer pays a part of the order online at checkout, such as a fixed ₹99 or 10%, and the rest in cash on delivery. A customer who has paid something is more committed to accepting the parcel. Apps like COD King and ByteInfy COD Partial Payment support it. Watch the extra gateway fee on the advance and any per-order commission the app charges.
  • Does Shopify charge a transaction fee on COD orders in India?

No. Shopify's help docs say you aren't charged third-party transaction fees for manual payment methods, and Cash on Delivery is one. The 2% (Basic), 1% (Grow), 0.6% (Advanced) or 0.2% (Plus) fee applies to prepaid orders through a third-party gateway like Razorpay or PayU. COD still costs money through your courier's COD charge and return shipping on refused parcels.
  • Which is the best COD verification app for Shopify India?

For most stores I'd start with COD King: free to install, 4.9 stars from 960 reviews, and it combines OTP by SMS or WhatsApp, partial COD, COD fees and location rules. Pick Hillteck if you want IVR calls and WhatsApp confirmation after the order. Pick Cashfree CODFIRM if you want RTO risk scoring and a one-click checkout. Check current prices on each listing.
  • How do I find my prepaid vs COD order share on Shopify?

Export your orders from the Orders page as a CSV and pivot on the payment method column, comparing Cash on Delivery against your gateway. Do it by month so you can see whether a prepaid nudge actually moved the split. Your gateway dashboard gives the prepaid side too. Track RTO separately from your courier panel, because COD share alone doesn't tell you what COD is costing you.
  • Is WhatsApp confirmation better than OTP for COD?

They catch different problems. An OTP at checkout proves the phone number is real and belongs to the buyer, so it blocks fake numbers before an order exists. A WhatsApp confirmation after the order checks intent once the impulse has passed, and lets the customer fix an address or switch to prepaid. Many stores run both: OTP for first-time COD buyers, WhatsApp confirmation on every COD order.
