What COD really costs a Shopify store in India, and how to raise your prepaid share

The short answer

  • Shopify charges no third-party transaction fee on its built-in Cash on Delivery method, because COD is a manual payment; the 2%, 1%, 0.6% or 0.2% fee applies only to prepaid gateway orders.
  • Shiprocket's COD fee is a fixed charge or a percentage of order value, whichever is higher; its own example shows ₹36 fixed against 2.5% on a ₹750 order.
  • Shiprocket remits standard COD on a D+8 working-day cycle, paid out three times a week, so cash reaches your bank about 10 working days after delivery.
  • An RTO costs you the forward freight and the return freight with no revenue, which is why COD's real cost is the return rate, not the COD fee.
  • On a ₹1,500 order on Basic with Razorpay, prepaid costs about ₹65.40 in payment fees; COD skips that but pays the courier COD fee and carries RTO risk.

Shopify charges nothing on Cash on Delivery orders, because COD is a manual payment method and Shopify's third-party fee only applies to gateway payments. The cost comes from elsewhere: a courier COD fee on every COD parcel, both legs of freight on every order that comes back as RTO, and cash that reaches your bank about ten working days after delivery. Most brands should keep COD but control it, and push prepaid with discounts, partial COD and a fast UPI checkout.

"What does COD cost?" is one of the questions I get most from Indian founders, usually asked as "Shopify India payment gateway fees and COD charges" in one breath. They're two different bills from two different companies. This post separates them, puts numbers on a ₹1,500 order, and then covers what actually moves your prepaid share.

For the wider cost picture (plans, gateway rates, apps), start at the Shopify pricing hub for India.

Does Shopify charge anything on COD orders?

No. Shopify's Help Center says it plainly: "You aren't charged third-party transaction fees for manual payments." Cash on Delivery is one of those manual methods. You switch it on under Settings, then Payments, in your Shopify admin.

That matters since Shopify Payments isn't available in India. Every prepaid order goes through a third-party gateway and pays Shopify's third-party fee on top of the gateway's own fee. COD orders skip both.

FeePrepaid order (UPI, card, netbanking)COD order
Shopify third-party fee2% Basic, 1% Grow, 0.6% Advanced, 0.2% Plus₹0
Gateway fee~2% + 18% GST on the fee (Razorpay standard)₹0
Courier COD fee₹0Fixed amount or % of order, whichever is higher
RTO exposureLowHigher
Cash in bankGateway settlement cycle~10 working days after delivery (Shiprocket standard)

One consequence people miss: if most of your orders are COD, the case for upgrading Shopify plans "to save on transaction fees" is weaker than it looks, since the fee only touches your prepaid revenue. The plan crossover works on prepaid sales only. On monthly billing, Grow beats Basic on fees above roughly ₹5,45,300 a month of prepaid sales, and Advanced beats Grow above roughly ₹56,79,000.

What does the courier charge for COD?

If you ship through an aggregator like Shiprocket, the COD fee is set per courier. Shiprocket's support article spells out the rule: "a fixed COD charge or COD% of the order value whichever is higher." Its worked example is a 0.5 kg parcel from New Delhi to Chennai with a ₹750 order value, where the courier's COD terms are ₹36 fixed or 2.5%. Since 2.5% of ₹750 is ₹18.75, the ₹36 applies.

Two things follow:

  • On low-value orders, the fixed charge dominates. A ₹36 COD fee on a ₹500 order is 7.2% of the order.
  • On higher-value orders, the percentage dominates. At 2.5%, a ₹3,000 order pays ₹75.

Your real rates depend on the courier, your Shiprocket plan and your volume. Shiprocket's plans run from a free Lite tier to Pro at ₹799 a month as of October 2026. Run a few of your typical orders through the rate calculator in the panel. I'd rather you plug in your actual number than trust any blog's average, including mine.

If you ship directly with Delhivery or another carrier, the COD charge sits in your contract. Ask for it in writing, along with the RTO terms.

What does RTO cost on a COD order?

RTO (return to origin) is the parcel that goes out, isn't accepted, and comes back. Shiprocket's support pages are clear that you're charged for the return journey, and that the RTO charge depends on weight and zone. You've already paid the forward freight. So a failed COD delivery costs you two legs of shipping, packaging, and the time that stock spent travelling instead of selling.

This is why I tell founders the COD fee is the small number. The RTO rate is the one that decides margin.

There's no official industry RTO figure I'd quote. Pull your own from your shipping panel, split by payment method. Prepaid orders get returned too, but a buyer who has already paid has far less reason to refuse the parcel.

How long until you get the cash?

Shiprocket's standard COD processing time is D+8, eight working days from delivery, with remittances paid three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Shiprocket's own estimate is about ten working days from delivery to your bank.

For a brand reordering stock every few weeks, ten working days of COD cash in transit adds up. If half your ₹10 lakh monthly revenue is COD, something like ₹2 to 2.5 lakh is sitting with the courier at any moment.

Shiprocket sells Early COD, which pays out within two days of delivery for a percentage fee. The exact plans and rates show in your panel. It's worth it when cash is tight, but it's one more cost to add to COD.

Worked example: a ₹1,500 order, prepaid vs COD

Assumptions, which you should swap for your own: Basic plan, Razorpay standard rates, and a courier with the same COD terms as Shiprocket's example (₹36 or 2.5%, whichever is higher). For RTO I use an illustrative ₹80 per leg of freight and a 20% RTO rate on COD. Those two numbers are placeholders, not benchmarks.

Cost per orderPrepaidCOD
Razorpay fee (2%)₹30.00₹0
GST on gateway fee (18%)₹5.40₹0
Shopify third-party fee (2%, Basic)₹30.00₹0
Courier COD fee (max of ₹36 or 2.5% of ₹1,500)₹0₹37.50
Expected RTO cost (20% × ₹160 two-way freight)small₹32.00
Total₹65.40₹69.50

On these assumptions they come out close. Change the RTO rate and the picture moves fast. At 30% RTO, the COD column rises to ₹85.50. At 10%, it falls to ₹53.50 and COD looks cheaper. That's the point: you can't answer "is COD expensive?" without your own RTO number.

The table also leaves out what's hardest to price: the slower cash, the stock that's off the shelf for a week, and the ad money you spent to win an order that came back. For more on courier setup, see Shopify fulfillment with Shiprocket, Delhivery and 3PLs.

How do D2C brands raise their prepaid share?

None of these levers is exotic. What matters is testing them one at a time against your own conversion and RTO data.

1. Pay people to prepay. A small prepaid discount or free shipping on prepaid orders is the most common lever. It works best when the incentive is visible on the product page and in the cart, before the buyer reaches the payment step.

2. Make COD cost something. A small COD fee or a partial COD advance (pay a part now by UPI, the rest on delivery) filters out casual orders. GoKwik's Kwik COD and Checkout lists partial COD and prepaid discounts among its features. GoKwik also notes it doesn't process the payments itself. Your gateway still does.

3. Hide COD where it hurts. Turn COD off above a cart value, on pincodes with a history of RTO, or for repeat refusers. Razorpay's Magic Checkout app lets you toggle COD and restrict it by shipping method. Several checkout apps offer pincode-level rules.

4. Make UPI the easy path. On mobile, UPI intent opens the buyer's UPI app in one tap. If paying by UPI takes fewer taps than choosing COD, more people pick it. I cover the setup in UPI payments on Shopify India.

5. Verify before you ship. A WhatsApp or call confirmation on COD orders catches fake and impulse orders before you pay freight on them.

6. Fix the trust gap. Many buyers pick COD because they don't trust a new brand with their money. Clear return policies, real reviews and a fast, professional checkout all help. Checkout abandonment in India goes deeper on this.

A caution from experience: don't kill COD outright to force prepaid. You'll see your RTO drop and think it worked, while the orders you lost never show up in any report.

Which numbers should you track every month?

You don't need a dashboard tool for this. A monthly export from Shopify and your shipping panel covers it.

MetricWhere to get itWhy it matters
Prepaid share of ordersShopify orders, filtered by payment methodTells you how much revenue pays Shopify's and the gateway's fee
COD RTO rateShipping panel, RTO by payment typeThe biggest hidden COD cost
RTO by pincodeShipping panel exportShows where to hide COD or ask for an advance
COD cash in transitRemittance reportWorking capital you can't spend yet
Blended payment cost per orderGateway report + courier invoicesThe single number to compare month on month

Once these sit in one sheet, the decisions get easier. A pincode with high RTO is an easy call to switch to prepaid-only. A month where prepaid share jumped but delivered revenue fell tells you the incentive or the COD restriction went too far.

What I'd do

I'd start by pulling three numbers from the last 90 days: prepaid share, COD RTO rate, and RTO by pincode. Most brands I work with have never put those side by side.

Then, in order: switch on a modest prepaid incentive, add a COD fee or partial advance on carts above your average order value, and hide COD on the worst pincodes. Run each change for a few weeks and watch total delivered revenue, not just prepaid share.

When I worked on checkout for Bug Beater Chairs, a US furniture retainer client, the changes were driven by their order data, not by best-practice lists. Payment methods are different in the US, but the method carries over to India: measure first, change one thing, measure again.

If you want your COD rules, checkout and gateway set up against your actual order data, tell me about your store. Send your monthly orders, COD share and RTO rate, and I'll tell you where the money is going. For platform costs, see the pricing hub.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

  • Does Shopify charge a fee on COD orders in India?

No. Shopify's Cash on Delivery is a manual payment method, and Shopify's Help Center says you aren't charged third-party transaction fees for manual payments. The 2% (Basic), 1% (Grow), 0.6% (Advanced) or 0.2% (Plus) fee applies only to orders paid through a third-party gateway such as Razorpay or Cashfree. Your courier still charges its own COD fee on each COD shipment.
  • How much do couriers charge for COD in India?

Aggregators like Shiprocket charge a COD fee per shipment that is a fixed amount or a percentage of the order value, whichever is higher. The rates depend on the courier you pick and your plan. Shiprocket's own help article uses an example of ₹36 fixed or 2.5%. Check the rate calculator in your panel for exact numbers, because they vary by courier and change over time.
  • How long does Shiprocket take to remit COD money?

Shiprocket's support pages describe a D+8 processing time, meaning eight working days from delivery, with remittances sent three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. In practice that puts COD cash in your bank about ten working days after delivery. Shiprocket also sells an Early COD option that pays out within two days of delivery for a fee.
  • What is a good prepaid order share for a Shopify store in India?

There's no official benchmark, and it varies a lot by category, price point and city mix. Rather than chase an industry number, measure your own prepaid share and RTO rate by month and by pincode, then move them. A higher prepaid share lowers RTO and speeds up cash flow, but forcing prepaid on buyers who won't pay upfront can cost you orders.
  • How do D2C brands increase prepaid orders on Shopify?

The common levers are a small prepaid discount or free shipping on prepaid, a COD fee or a partial COD advance, hiding COD on high-risk pincodes or high cart values, and making UPI the fastest option at checkout. Checkout apps such as GoKwik's Kwik COD and Checkout and Razorpay's Magic Checkout add COD controls. Test one lever at a time and watch both conversion rate and RTO.
  • Is COD cheaper than prepaid on Shopify in India?

Per delivered order, COD can look cheaper because Shopify and the gateway take nothing. Once you add the courier COD fee, the cost of orders that come back as RTO and the cash locked up for about ten working days, COD usually costs more. Prepaid orders on a ₹1,500 basket on Basic with Razorpay cost about ₹65.40 in fees. Compare that with your COD fee plus your RTO losses.
  • Should I disable COD on my Shopify store?

Usually no. Many Indian shoppers still prefer COD, and turning it off can lose more orders than it saves on returns. A better approach is to keep COD but control it: hide it above a cart value or on pincodes with high RTO, charge a small COD fee or take a partial advance, and verify COD orders before shipping. Decide with your own RTO data.
