Google Shopping feed setup for Shopify (India)

To run Google Shopping for a Shopify store in India, connect the Google & YouTube app to a verified Merchant Center account, submit GST-inclusive INR prices that exactly match your product pages, and supply the required fields — title, brand, GTIN or identifier_exists, and a Google product category. Most Indian feeds fail on price mismatches and missing identifiers, not on ads setup.

I am a senior Shopify developer in Delhi, and I build and clean product feeds for Indian D2C brands. Nearly every "my Google ads aren't working" call I take turns out to be a feed problem — disapprovals, mismatched prices, or missing identifiers — long before it is a bidding problem. So this is the feed-first version: get the data right, and the ads take care of themselves.

What actually is the Google Shopping feed?

Your Google Shopping feed is a structured list of every product you want to advertise, with a fixed set of attributes Google understands — title, description, price, availability, image link, brand, GTIN, and so on. It lives in Google Merchant Center, and it powers three things at once: paid Shopping ads, Performance Max campaigns, and free listings on the Shopping tab.

On Shopify you rarely build this feed by hand. The official Google & YouTube channel app generates it from your product data and keeps it synced. That is the good news. The bad news is that the app only forwards what is in your store — so if your product data is thin, wrong, or inconsistent with your GST settings, the feed inherits every one of those problems and Google disapproves the items.

The mental model that saves you weeks: the feed is a mirror of your Shopify data. You do not fix the feed in Merchant Center. You fix the product data in Shopify and let it re-sync.

How do I connect Shopify to Merchant Center in India?

The clean path for an Indian store is short:

  1. Create a Merchant Center account with your real business name and Indian address, currency set to INR.
  2. Verify the business and add clear contact, returns, and shipping policy pages on your store — Google checks these before serving.
  3. Install the Google & YouTube app in Shopify and connect it to that Merchant Center account.
  4. Confirm your tax settings so displayed prices are GST-inclusive (more on this below — it is the single biggest India-specific trap).
  5. Let the feed sync, then work through disapprovals product by product.

If you are still deciding which apps belong on the store at all, I keep a running shortlist in the best Shopify apps for Indian D2C brands — the Google & YouTube channel is a permanent fixture on it.

Which feed fields are required — and which quietly matter?

Google splits attributes into required, recommended, and situational. For an Indian D2C catalogue, here is the honest priority order.

FieldRequired?India note
idYesShopify variant ID; leave the app to manage it
titleYesFront-load brand + product type + key attribute
descriptionYesReal copy, not keyword spam; Google reads it
linkYesMust resolve to the live, in-stock product page
image_linkYesClean product shot; no promo text overlaid
priceYesGST-inclusive INR, matching the page exactly
availabilityYesin stock / out of stock, synced live
brandYes*Required unless a genuinely brand-less category
gtinCond.Required for products with a real barcode
mpnCond.Use when there is no GTIN
identifier_existsCond.Set false for own-brand/handmade with no GTIN
google_product_categoryRec.Map correctly; drives free-listing eligibility
product_typeRec.Your own taxonomy; helps campaign structure
custom_label_0–4OptionalPowerful for segmenting Performance Max

The two columns that break Indian feeds most often are price and the identifier trio (gtin / mpn / identifier_exists). Everything else the app tends to map correctly on its own.

Why does my feed price keep getting disapproved?

Because Google crawls your landing page and compares the price it finds there against the price in your feed. If they differ by even a rupee, the item is disapproved as a price mismatch and stops serving. In India, the usual culprit is GST.

Here is the trap. If your Shopify prices are stored tax-exclusive and GST is added at checkout, the product page can show one number and the feed can carry another. The customer sees a lower price on the product page than the final price, or the feed and page disagree, and Google flags it.

The fix is to make the displayed price the final GST-inclusive price and keep the feed identical to it. Concretely:

SettingGet it wrongGet it right
Price displayTax added at checkout, page shows ex-GST"All prices include tax" — page shows final price
Feed pricePulls a different number than the pagePulls the exact page price
Result"Mismatched price" disapprovalApproved and serving

For the full India GST-on-Shopify picture — how to configure tax-inclusive pricing, GST invoices, and COD interplay — I go deeper in Shopify Payments, COD and GST in India. Get that page's setup right first, and most of your Shopping price disapprovals disappear before you ever open Merchant Center.

A worked example makes the maths obvious. Say a serum retails at ₹999 all-in:

LineINRUSD (~₹83)
Displayed page price (GST-inclusive)₹999~$12
Feed price submitted₹999~$12
Difference Google sees₹0$0

Zero difference is the only acceptable answer. If your feed shows ₹847 (the ex-GST figure) against a ₹999 page, you get disapproved — every time.

GTIN, MPN, identifier_exists — how do I get identifiers right in India?

Product identifiers are where feeds silently lose reach. Google uses the GTIN (the number under a barcode) to match your product to its catalogue. Get it right and your item is eligible for more surfaces; get it wrong and you invite an "incorrect identifier" disapproval.

The decision is simpler than it looks:

  • You resell branded, manufactured goods (electronics, packaged FMCG, books). They have a real barcode — submit the GTIN. Do not guess it; read it off the packaging.
  • You are the brand and your products have no barcode (own-label apparel, handmade candles, private-label skincare). Set identifier_exists = false and supply a strong brand plus an mpn (your own SKU works). This is legitimate and common for D2C.
  • Never invent a GTIN. A plausible-but-wrong number is worse than none — it disapproves the item and can flag the account.

On Shopify, GTIN maps from the variant's Barcode (ISBN, UPC, GTIN, etc.) field. Fill that field for products that have one, leave it empty for products that genuinely do not, and the Google & YouTube app handles identifier_exists accordingly. For a large catalogue, driving identifiers and custom labels from metafields is the scalable approach — the same structured-data discipline I describe in a Shopify metafield strategy that machines can read pays off here too.

What are the disapprovals that actually kill Indian feeds?

After the price-mismatch issue, these are the ones I see most on Indian stores, in rough order of frequency:

  1. Mismatched price / availability — GST setting, or stock not synced. Fix the source data.
  2. Missing or incorrect GTIN — resolve with the identifier logic above.
  3. Missing required field — usually brand or a bad google_product_category. Map it.
  4. Policy / account issues — no returns page, weak shipping policy, or a restricted category (supplements, certain wellness claims). India enforces these; write real policy pages.
  5. Image problems — promotional text or logos burned into the product image. Use a clean shot.
  6. Landing page issues — product page 404s, redirects, or shows out of stock while the feed says in stock.

Merchant Center tells you the exact reason per item under Products → Needs attention. Work top-down: one systemic fix (like the GST setting) often clears hundreds of items at once. Resubmit, and most re-approve within a few days.

Should I turn on free listings?

Yes — there is no reason not to. Free listings show your products across Google's Shopping tab and other free surfaces at no media cost, driven by the same feed. You opt in to the free listings surface in Merchant Center, and once your feed is clean, it is genuinely free qualified traffic.

It will not match paid volume, and it rewards the same hygiene as ads — accurate google_product_category, good titles, valid identifiers, in-stock landing pages. But for an Indian D2C brand watching every rupee of ad spend, leaving free listings off is leaving traffic on the table. Turn it on the day your feed goes green.

Performance Max basics for an Indian D2C brand

Once the feed is approved, Performance Max is how most Shopify brands actually spend on Google Shopping today — it blends Shopping, Search, Display, and YouTube inventory into one campaign driven by your feed and asset groups. A few honest guardrails for India:

  • Budget for the learning phase. Performance Max needs enough daily conversions to exit learning. A token budget switched on and off never stabilises — commit a sustained daily spend for several weeks before judging it.
  • Start feed-heavy. For an e-commerce catalogue, a Shopping-led asset group (feed plus a few strong creatives) usually outperforms a creative-heavy one at the start.
  • Use custom labels. Segment by margin, bestseller status, or seasonality via custom_label_0–4 so you can steer budget toward products that actually make money.
  • Feed the algorithm clean conversion data. This is where your analytics has to be right. If your conversion tracking is broken, Performance Max optimises toward noise. Get GA4 set up correctly for a Shopify store in India before you scale spend.
  • Expect noisy early numbers. The first two weeks are exploration. Do not gut a campaign on day three.

Performance Max is powerful precisely because it leans on your feed and your conversion signal. Both of those are data-quality problems, not bidding problems — which is why the feed work in this post is where the real leverage is.

Do I need a developer for any of this?

For a small, tidy catalogue, honestly no. The Google & YouTube app plus disciplined product data gets many Indian stores live on their own, and I would rather you launch than wait.

A developer earns the fee when the catalogue is large or messy: hundreds of variants with inconsistent identifiers, GST settings that need auditing, metafield-driven custom labels, variant-level attribute mapping, and clearing stubborn disapprovals at scale. That is optimisation and cleanup work — the kind that turns a half-approved feed into a fully serving one — not a prerequisite for going live.

What's next

If your Merchant Center is a sea of red disapprovals, or your GST-inclusive pricing and feed prices refuse to agree, that is a feed-and-data problem I fix regularly for Indian D2C brands. Tell me your platform, catalogue size, and what Merchant Center is complaining about at /start and I will tell you whether it is a one-afternoon settings fix or a proper cleanup — with an honest fixed number either way.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

  • Do I need GTINs to run Google Shopping in India?

For branded, manufactured products with a real barcode, yes — Google expects a valid GTIN and will limit or disapprove listings without one. For your own-brand or handmade products that genuinely have no GTIN, set identifier_exists to false and supply a strong brand plus MPN instead. Never invent a GTIN; a wrong one triggers "incorrect identifier" disapprovals that are hard to recover from.
  • Should feed prices include GST?

Yes. The price you submit in your Google Shopping feed must be the final price a customer in India pays, GST included, matching the price shown on your Shopify product page at checkout. Google crawls your landing page and compares it to the feed; any mismatch — even a rounding difference from a tax setting — causes a "mismatched price" disapproval and pauses the item.
  • Why did Google disapprove my Shopify products in India?

The common Indian causes are price mismatches between feed and landing page (usually a GST or currency setting), missing or invalid GTINs, missing required fields like brand or a proper Google product category, and policy issues on restricted categories. Merchant Center lists the exact reason per item under Products — fix the field, resubmit, and most items re-approve within a few days.
  • Are Google Shopping free listings available in India?

Yes. Free listings surface your products across the Google Shopping tab and other free surfaces at no cost, driven by the same Merchant Center feed as paid ads. You opt in under the free listings surface in Merchant Center. It will not replace paid traffic volume, but for an Indian D2C brand it is genuinely free qualified traffic once the feed is clean, so there is no reason to leave it off.
  • What is the best way to connect Shopify to Merchant Center in India?

Use the official Google & YouTube channel app from the Shopify App Store. It creates and syncs the product feed automatically, maps most fields, and keeps prices and stock in sync. For an Indian store, confirm the currency is INR, GST is configured so displayed prices are tax-inclusive, and your business and delivery details in Merchant Center match your store exactly.
  • Do I need a verified business to run Google Shopping in India?

Yes. Merchant Center requires business verification and clear contact, return, and shipping policies before your products can serve. For an Indian store that means a working returns page, a shipping/delivery policy with realistic timelines, and consistent business details. Missing or weak policy pages are one of the most common reasons a new Indian account stays stuck in review.
  • How much should an Indian D2C brand budget for Performance Max?

Performance Max needs enough daily budget to exit its learning phase and gather conversion data, so a meaningful test usually means a few hundred to a couple of thousand rupees per day sustained for several weeks, not a token amount switched on and off. Start with a Shopping-heavy asset group, feed-only if you can, and let it run before judging results — early Performance Max numbers are noisy.
  • Can I run Google Shopping without a developer?

For a small, clean catalogue, yes — the Google & YouTube app plus tidy product data gets many Indian stores live on its own. A developer earns their fee when the feed is large or messy: GTIN and identifier logic, metafield-driven custom labels, variant-level attributes, and clearing stubborn disapprovals at scale. That is optimisation work, not a requirement to launch.
