The hidden costs of running a Shopify store in India
The plan fee is the small number. Apps, gateway fees, themes, developer time, shipping, and RTO are where the real monthly cost of an Indian Shopify store hides. Here is a realistic TCO you can plan against.

The Shopify plan fee is the smallest cost of running a store in India. A working D2C store realistically costs ₹35,000 to ₹1,20,000 a month all-in once you add apps, payment gateway fees, shipping, and returns — and the plan is often under 10% of that. The two lines that quietly dominate are payment processing and RTO on COD orders.
I am a senior Shopify developer in Delhi, and I have watched dozens of Indian D2C founders budget for the ₹1,994 Basic plan and then get blindsided by a ₹60,000 monthly reality. This is the honest breakdown of where the money actually goes, so you can plan against the real number instead of the sticker one.
What is the real monthly cost of a Shopify store in India?
Here is the mistake almost everyone makes: they compare Shopify plans, pick one, and treat that fee as "the cost of Shopify." The plan is the entry ticket. The running cost is everything that stacks on top of it, and most of those lines scale with your order volume, not your plan choice.
Here is a realistic all-in monthly picture for three stages of an Indian D2C store. Numbers are approximate and USD uses ₹83 = $1.
| Cost line | Early (~₹3L/mo revenue) | Growing (~₹10L/mo) | Scaling (~₹40L/mo) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify plan | ₹1,994 ($24) | ₹7,447 ($90) | ₹30,164 ($363) |
| Apps | ₹4,000 ($48) | ₹12,000 ($145) | ₹25,000 ($301) |
| Payment gateway (~2%) | ₹6,000 ($72) | ₹20,000 ($241) | ₹80,000 ($964) |
| Shipping + fulfilment | ₹9,000 ($108) | ₹35,000 ($422) | ₹1,40,000 ($1,687) |
| RTO / returns loss | ₹6,000 ($72) | ₹28,000 ($337) | ₹1,10,000 ($1,325) |
| Developer / maintenance | ₹0–5,000 | ₹15,000 ($181) | ₹60,000 ($723) |
| Rough monthly total | ~₹27,000–32,000 | ~₹1,17,000 | ~₹4,45,000 |
Notice what happens as you scale: the Shopify plan line barely moves, while payment fees, shipping, and RTO explode. By the scaling stage, the plan is under 1% of your running cost. Anyone obsessing over the ₹1,994-vs-₹7,447 plan question is optimising the wrong line. Let me walk each one.
Line 1: the Shopify plan (the number everyone quotes)
As of 2026, Shopify India plans run roughly: Starter ~₹400/mo, Basic ~₹1,994/mo, Shopify ~₹7,447/mo, and Advanced ~₹30,164/mo, with Plus starting around $2,300/mo (₹1.9–2 lakh/mo). Annual billing knocks about 25% off — Basic drops to ~₹1,499/mo and Shopify to ~₹5,599/mo when paid yearly. Always verify current pricing on shopify.com/in/pricing, since Shopify adjusts India pricing periodically.
The honest take: for most stores the plan choice is a rounding error next to the rest of your stack. The one place it matters is the platform transaction fee on third-party gateways, which I cover below, and the Advanced-only shipping and reporting features. If you want the full plan-by-plan logic, I wrote a dedicated breakdown in Shopify Basic vs Advanced plan in India, and the total subscription math in Shopify's total monthly cost in India.
Move that matters: if you are certain you are staying on Shopify — most established stores are — switch to annual billing. On the Shopify plan that is roughly ₹22,000 saved a year for a decision you make once.
Line 2: apps — the cost that creeps
This is where budgets quietly blow up. A bare store needs almost no apps. A real D2C store ends up with a stack: reviews, email/WhatsApp marketing, a page builder, upsell/cross-sell, a returns or RTO tool, maybe a subscription app. Each is ₹500 to ₹8,000 a month, and they add up fast.
| App category | Typical monthly (INR) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Reviews (Judge.me, Loox) | ₹1,000–2,500 | Loox pricier, photo reviews |
| Email/WhatsApp marketing | ₹2,000–15,000 | Scales with contact list size |
| Page builder | ₹1,500–4,000 | Often replaceable by a dev |
| Upsell / bundles | ₹1,500–4,000 | Should pay for itself in AOV |
| Returns / RTO tool | ₹2,000–6,000 | Earns its keep in India |
| Subscriptions | ₹2,000–8,000 | Only if you sell replenishables |
Two traps. First, app pricing is in USD, so a ₹7,000 monthly app spend is really ~$85 that drifts with the exchange rate. Second, usage-based pricing: marketing apps like Klaviyo charge by your contact count, so the bill grows every month you collect emails, whether or not those contacts convert. A store paying ₹4,000 at 2,000 contacts can be paying ₹18,000 at 15,000 contacts for the same features.
Apps also have a second, invisible cost: they slow your store down. Every app that injects scripts adds weight to your pages, and page weight costs you conversions. I dug into that trade-off in how Shopify app overhead hurts performance and choosing the best Shopify apps for Indian D2C. The cheapest app audit you will ever run: open your billing, and remove anything you cannot name a reason for.
Line 3: payment gateway and transaction fees
This is the line that never stops growing, because it is a percentage of revenue. Two separate fees can apply, and founders routinely confuse them.
The gateway's processing fee. Indian gateways (Razorpay, Cashfree, PayU, and Shopify Payments where available) charge roughly 2% + GST per successful transaction on domestic cards and UPI, and more on international cards, EMI, and some wallets. This is unavoidable — it is the cost of accepting money online.
Shopify's platform transaction fee. This is the one you can avoid. If you use a third-party gateway instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify adds its own cut on top: as of 2026, roughly 2% on Basic, 1% on Shopify, and 0.5% on Advanced — and 0% on Shopify Payments. Verify current rates on shopify.com/in/pricing.
Here is what those two fees do to ₹10 lakh of monthly revenue:
| Setup | Gateway fee (~2%) | Shopify platform fee | Total on ₹10L |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify Payments | ₹20,000 | ₹0 | ₹20,000 |
| 3rd-party on Basic | ₹20,000 | ₹20,000 (2%) | ₹40,000 |
| 3rd-party on Shopify | ₹20,000 | ₹10,000 (1%) | ₹30,000 |
| 3rd-party on Advanced | ₹20,000 | ₹5,000 (0.5%) | ₹25,000 |
That is up to ₹20,000 a month — ₹2.4 lakh a year — for the "convenience" of a third-party gateway on the wrong plan. On Shopify Payments you skip the platform fee entirely. I broke down the gateway decision in full in Shopify transaction fees in India and the Shopify payment gateway comparison. If you also run COD and need GST-clean invoicing, Shopify Payments, COD, and GST in India covers the compliance side.
Line 4: theme and design
The theme is a one-time or occasional cost that people overestimate at launch and underestimate later.
- Free theme (Dawn and friends): ₹0. Genuinely fine to launch with.
- Premium theme (one-time): ₹0–30,000 for a Shopify Theme Store licence. Paid once, yours forever.
- Custom theme build: ₹1,50,000–8,00,000 when you have outgrown templates and need a brand-specific storefront.
The trap is not the theme price — it is the ongoing tax a wrong theme charges you. A bloated premium theme with ten built-in features you do not use will slow your store and cost conversions every day it is live. That is a running cost hiding as a one-time purchase. I laid out the decision in custom Shopify theme vs premium theme. Most stores should launch on a premium theme and only commission a custom build once revenue justifies it.
Line 5: the developer
Not a launch requirement — a growth cost. You can launch with no developer. You start paying one when the store stops serving the business: speed drops below Core Web Vitals thresholds, conversion stalls, or you need a feature no app provides cleanly.
| Developer engagement | Cost |
|---|---|
| One-off theme tweak / feature | from ₹40,000 |
| Custom theme build | ₹1,50,000–8,00,000 |
| Monthly retainer (ongoing dev + CRO) | ₹40,000–80,000/mo |
| Migration onto Shopify | ₹1,25,000–6,00,000 |
The mistake is treating a developer as pure cost. A good developer's work should return more than it costs — a speed fix that lifts conversion 10%, or an app you can delete because the feature is now native. If your store is slow, why your Shopify store is slow and how to fix Core Web Vitals is the place to start; if traffic converts poorly, why your Shopify store is not converting is the diagnostic. See my full developer rates for India for where each engagement lands.
Line 6: shipping and fulfilment
For most physical-goods D2C brands, this is the single largest running cost — bigger than everything digital combined. Aggregators like Shiprocket and Delhivery price per shipment by weight and zone, typically ₹40–90 for a light forward parcel within-zone, more for heavier or cross-country. Add packaging, and every order carries a real rupee cost before you count returns.
Shipping scales linearly with orders, so it never becomes a smaller share of revenue — it stays roughly proportional. The lever here is not the plan or the platform; it is negotiating rates, choosing couriers by zone, and getting your packaging weight down. I covered the fulfilment stack in Shopify with Shiprocket and Delhivery for India.
Line 7: RTO — the cost nobody budgets for
This is the one that sinks Indian D2C margins, and it appears on no pricing page. RTO — return to origin — is a COD order that never gets delivered and comes back to you. You pay forward shipping, reverse shipping, and packaging, and you earn zero revenue against it. It is pure loss.
Indian D2C RTO rates commonly run 25–35% on COD, and COD is often 50–70% of orders. Do the math on the "growing" store above: at ₹10 lakh revenue, a 30% RTO rate on a COD-heavy order book quietly burns ₹25,000–30,000 a month in shipping and handling on parcels that generated nothing. That is larger than your apps and plan combined.
| RTO rate | Monthly RTO loss on ~₹10L revenue (COD-heavy) |
|---|---|
| 15% | ~₹12,000 |
| 25% | ~₹22,000 |
| 35% | ~₹32,000 |
RTO is also the most reducible hidden cost. Address verification, a COD confirmation step (WhatsApp or OTP), partial-prepaid nudges, and blocking repeat RTO pincodes can move your rate by ten points — worth more to your P&L than any plan or app decision. That work lives at the checkout and order-flow layer, which is exactly where a developer earns their retainer. See reducing checkout abandonment in India for the prepaid-conversion side of the same problem.
So how do I cut the real cost?
In order of impact, largest lever first — the opposite of where most founders start:
- Attack RTO. Address verification, COD confirmation, and prepaid nudges. Biggest single lever on margin.
- Fix payment routing. Use Shopify Payments where available to kill the platform transaction fee; renegotiate gateway rates as volume grows.
- Audit apps quarterly. Remove what you do not use, consolidate overlapping tools. A single audit often frees ₹5,000–15,000/mo.
- Negotiate shipping by zone and courier, and cut packaging weight.
- Switch to annual billing on the plan. Set-and-forget ~25% off the smallest line.
Notice the plan fee — the number everyone starts with — is dead last. That is the whole point of this post. If you want the flip side, whether Shopify is even worth it at these numbers, I argue it through in is Shopify worth it in India, and the launch-cost view is in the cost to build a Shopify website in India.
What's next
If you want an honest read on your store's real running cost — not the plan fee, the whole stack — my developer rates for India page lays out exactly what each engagement costs and what it returns. Most of the biggest savings above (RTO, payment routing, app bloat) are developer work that pays for itself.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it really cost to run a Shopify store in India per month?
A realistic all-in figure for a working D2C store is roughly ₹35,000 to ₹1,20,000 a month once you add the plan, apps, payment gateway fees, shipping, and returns to the base subscription. The Shopify plan itself is often under 10% of that total. Order volume, RTO rate, and your app stack move the number far more than which plan you pick. What is the biggest hidden cost of a Shopify store in India?
RTO — return to origin on cash-on-delivery orders. Every undelivered COD parcel costs you forward plus reverse shipping, packaging, and handling with zero revenue to offset it. At a 25–35% RTO rate, which is common in Indian D2C, this quietly becomes the single largest line item after the cost of goods, larger than apps and the plan combined. How much do Shopify apps cost per month in India?
Most stores spend ₹4,000 to ₹25,000 a month on apps once you add reviews, email or WhatsApp marketing, a page builder, upsells, and a returns tool. App prices are billed in USD, so a ₹7,000 monthly spend is really about $85 that moves with the exchange rate. The trap is usage-based pricing on marketing apps, which scales with your contact list, not a flat fee.Does Shopify charge a transaction fee in India?
Only if you use a third-party payment gateway instead of Shopify Payments. As of 2026 that platform fee is roughly 2% on Basic, 1% on Shopify, and 0.5% on Advanced, on top of the gateway's own processing fee. On Shopify Payments the platform transaction fee is 0%. Verify current numbers on shopify.com/in/pricing before you budget.Do I need a paid theme and a developer for a Shopify store?
Not on day one. A free or one-time premium theme (₹0 to ₹30,000) can launch a clean store. You start paying a developer when the theme fights your brand, speed drops, or conversion stalls — a fix from ₹40,000, or a retainer of ₹40,000 to ₹80,000 a month. Treat developer cost as growth spend, not a launch requirement. Why is annual billing on Shopify worth it?
Annual billing cuts the plan fee by roughly 25%, which on the Shopify plan is a saving of about ₹22,000 a year versus paying monthly. The catch is you commit a year of platform fee upfront. If you are certain you are staying on Shopify — most established stores are — annual billing is close to free money. Verify the current discount on shopify.com/in/pricing.How do payment gateway fees add up for an Indian D2C store?
Indian gateways typically charge around 2% plus GST per successful transaction, sometimes more on international cards and EMI. On ₹10 lakh of monthly revenue that is roughly ₹20,000 to ₹24,000 a month in processing alone, before Shopify's platform fee if you are not on Shopify Payments. It scales directly with revenue, so it never goes away — it grows with you.Can I reduce the running cost of my Shopify store?
Yes, in order of impact: cut your RTO rate with address verification and COD confirmation, audit and remove apps you do not use, move to annual billing, and consolidate two mediocre apps into one good one. A single-app audit often frees ₹5,000 to ₹15,000 a month. Chasing a cheaper plan is usually the smallest lever of the four.
