Shopify Basic vs Shopify vs Advanced: which plan for Indian D2C
The right Shopify plan for an Indian D2C brand is decided by fee-crossover math, not features. Here is the exact monthly revenue at which each upgrade pays for itself — Basic to Shopify to Advanced — worked out in INR.

Pick your Shopify plan by fee-crossover math, not features. As of 2026, an Indian D2C brand should stay on Basic (~₹1,994/mo) until the card-rate and platform-fee saving from the next tier beats the price jump — a crossover that usually lands in the low-to-mid lakhs of monthly revenue for the Shopify plan, and around ₹15–25 lakh/month for Advanced.
I'm a senior Shopify developer based in Delhi, and I set up and migrate stores onto every one of these tiers for D2C brands — so I've watched founders overpay for Advanced at ₹3 lakh/month revenue and cling to Basic well past the point it costs them money. This post is the decision math the plan-listing pages skip: not what each tier has, but the exact revenue at which each upgrade starts paying for itself. If you just want the plan structure and INR prices, the Shopify pricing plans pillar covers that. This is the crossover layer on top.
Why the plan comparison is really a fee comparison
Every "Basic vs Advanced" article you'll read lists features: staff accounts, report builders, shipping discounts, checkout capacity. Those matter at the edges. But for a D2C brand doing real order volume, the feature list is not what decides the plan — the money that leaves your account per order decides it.
Two numbers drive that, and they both improve as you climb tiers:
- The card-processing rate you pay on every transaction (lower on higher plans).
- The platform transaction fee — Shopify's own cut when you use a third-party gateway instead of Shopify Payments (2% on Basic, ~1% on Shopify, ~0.5% on Advanced as of 2026; 0% on any plan if you use Shopify Payments).
So the real question isn't "which plan has the features I want." It's "at what monthly revenue does the per-order saving from the next tier exceed the extra subscription I'd pay for it?" That's a crossover point, and it's different for every brand because it depends on your volume and your gateway. Get it right and the higher plan is free — it pays for itself in fees. Get it wrong and you're donating a subscription fee to Shopify for nothing.
The three plans, priced for the maths
Here's the ledger I actually use when I model a client's plan, as of 2026. Verify the live figures on Shopify's India pricing page before you commit, because promotional rates shift through the year.
| Plan | Monthly (INR) | Annual (~25% off) | USD ~/mo | Platform fee (3rd-party gateway) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | ~₹1,994 | ~₹1,499 | ~$24 | ~2% |
| Shopify | ~₹7,447 | ~₹5,599 | ~$90 | ~1% |
| Advanced | ~₹30,164 | ~₹22,680 | ~$364 | ~0.5% |
The gaps that matter for crossover math:
- Basic → Shopify: roughly ₹5,453/mo more (monthly billing).
- Shopify → Advanced: roughly ₹22,717/mo more (monthly billing).
Those two deltas are the hurdles each upgrade has to clear in fee savings. Everything below is about finding the revenue where it does.
How the crossover actually works
The mechanic is simple once you separate the two levers.
On a third-party gateway, the platform fee is a clean percentage of revenue, so the crossover is easy to solve. Basic charges 2%, the Shopify plan charges ~1%. Upgrading saves you ~1% of revenue. That saving beats the ~₹5,453/mo price gap once:
Monthly revenue × 1% > ₹5,453 → revenue > ~₹5,45,000/month.
So a brand on a third-party gateway crosses over from Basic to the Shopify plan at roughly ₹5.5 lakh/month on the platform fee alone — before you even count the card-rate improvement, which pushes the crossover earlier.
On Shopify Payments, the platform fee is zero on every tier, so that lever disappears. The only saving left is the card-rate delta between tiers — a smaller number — which is why Shopify Payments users cross over at higher revenue. The tier's whole value proposition on Shopify Payments is "cheaper processing," and cheaper processing only outruns a bigger subscription once your volume is large.
This is the single most important insight in the post, so I'll state it plainly: your payment gateway changes your right plan more than your revenue does. A brand on a third-party gateway should upgrade far sooner than an identical brand on Shopify Payments.
Worked crossover: Basic vs the Shopify plan
Let's make it concrete with a brand doing card sales in India. I'll model the platform-fee lever (the cleanest to compute) and treat the card-rate saving as an accelerator on top.
| Monthly revenue | Basic platform fee (2%, 3rd-party) | Shopify plan fee (1%, 3rd-party) | Fee saving | Beats ₹5,453 price gap? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹2,00,000 | ₹4,000 | ₹2,000 | ₹2,000 | No — stay on Basic |
| ₹4,00,000 | ₹8,000 | ₹4,000 | ₹4,000 | No — close |
| ₹5,50,000 | ₹11,000 | ₹5,500 | ₹5,500 | Yes — crossover |
| ₹8,00,000 | ₹16,000 | ₹8,000 | ₹8,000 | Yes — upgrade clearly wins |
On a third-party gateway, the Basic → Shopify move pays for itself around ₹5.5 lakh/month on platform fee alone, and the card-rate saving drops that further into the low lakhs. On Shopify Payments, with no platform fee, the same move relies purely on the card-rate delta, so the crossover sits higher — commonly in the low-to-mid lakhs, and worth calculating precisely rather than guessing.
The takeaway: launch on Basic, and don't upgrade to the Shopify plan on instinct at your first ₹1 lakh month. Upgrade the month your card volume makes the saving beat ₹5,453.
Worked crossover: Shopify plan vs Advanced
This is where founders overspend most. Advanced is a ₹22,717/mo jump over the Shopify plan — a serious number — and its fee advantages are thinner than people assume.
| Monthly revenue | Shopify fee (1%, 3rd-party) | Advanced fee (0.5%, 3rd-party) | Fee saving | Beats ₹22,717 price gap? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹20,00,000 | ₹20,000 | ₹10,000 | ₹10,000 | No — stay on Shopify plan |
| ₹35,00,000 | ₹35,000 | ₹17,500 | ₹17,500 | No — close |
| ₹45,00,000 | ₹45,000 | ₹22,500 | ₹22,500 | Yes — crossover |
| ₹60,00,000 | ₹60,000 | ₹30,000 | ₹30,000 | Yes — Advanced wins |
On a third-party gateway, the platform-fee lever alone doesn't justify Advanced until roughly ₹45 lakh/month. On Shopify Payments, where the only saving is the small card-rate delta, the honest crossover for most Indian D2C brands lands around ₹15–25 lakh/month — and it's the card-rate improvement, not the platform fee, doing the work there.
Notice the two scenarios point in opposite directions between the two upgrades: on a third-party gateway the Shopify plan pays off earlier (₹5.5L) but Advanced pays off later (₹45L). The reason is the shrinking percentage steps — 2% to 1% is a full point saved, but 1% to 0.5% is only half a point against a much bigger subscription jump. Advanced has to work harder to earn its keep.
What Advanced buys beyond the fee saving
I'm not anti-Advanced — I just want it bought for the right reason. Once the fee maths is close, these extras can tip it:
- The report builder / custom analytics — genuinely better for a brand running serious cohort, LTV, and margin analysis in-platform rather than exporting to a warehouse.
- More staff accounts — matters once you have a real team touching the admin.
- Calculated third-party carrier rates at checkout — useful if you show live courier rates rather than flat shipping.
- Higher checkout capacity — relevant for spiky festive traffic; see festive Shopify readiness if Diwali/BFCM peaks are your concern.
But treat these as the tiebreaker, not the trigger. If you're jumping to Advanced only for the analytics at ₹5 lakh/month revenue, you're paying ₹22,717/mo for a report builder. Buy it when the fee saving already covers most of the gap and the features are the cherry on top.
Plan by stage: a straight decision table
Stripping the theory back to a recommendation, here's how I'd place an Indian D2C brand by monthly revenue — assuming Shopify Payments where available, and noting where a third-party gateway shifts it.
| Monthly revenue (INR) | Default plan | Why | If on 3rd-party gateway |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹0 – ₹5 lakh | Basic | Full storefront, unlimited products; upgrade saving too small | Consider Shopify plan past ~₹5.5L |
| ₹5 – ₹15 lakh | Shopify plan | Card-rate saving now beats the price gap | Already worth it earlier |
| ₹15 – ₹45 lakh | Shopify plan → Advanced | Advanced crossover on Shopify Payments starts here | Advanced pays off ~₹45L on fee alone |
| ₹45 lakh+ | Advanced | Fee saving clears the ₹22,717 gap comfortably | Advanced clearly wins |
| Enterprise / B2B / intl | Plus | Different tier entirely — see below | — |
Two honest caveats. First, these are guide bands, not rules — your exact card mix (UPI vs cards vs COD), average order value, and gateway all move the numbers, so model your own transaction fees before you switch. Second, the subscription is the small line on your real bill; apps, developer time, shipping, and RTO dwarf it. The full picture is in hidden costs of a Shopify store in India and the total monthly cost breakdown.
When the answer is none of these three — Shopify Plus
If you're weighing Advanced but you're actually here because you've outgrown the standard tiers — wholesale/B2B, international markets, checkout customization, or heavy Flow automation — the honest answer is that your next step isn't Advanced, it's Plus. Plus is quoted per merchant, typically from around $2,300/mo (~₹1.9–2 lakh/mo) as of 2026, and it's a different product, not just a pricier plan.
The trigger for Plus isn't a revenue number on its own — it's needing capabilities the standard plans can't give you. I've written the full threshold logic in when to upgrade to Shopify Plus and the India-specific revenue view in Shopify Plus revenue threshold. If you're not doing B2B, international, or custom checkout yet, Advanced is almost always the right stop before Plus.
The mistake I see most often
Two failure modes, and they're mirror images:
- Overpaying early. A founder reads that Advanced is "the serious brand plan," starts there at ₹3 lakh/month, and hands Shopify ~₹28,000/mo more than Basic would cost — before their volume recovers a rupee of it. Over a year that's ₹3.4 lakh of subscription that bought nothing but a better report builder.
- Underpaying late. The opposite: a brand doing ₹40 lakh/month on a third-party gateway, still on Basic, paying 2% platform fee (₹80,000/mo) when the Shopify plan's 1% (₹40,000/mo) would save them ₹40,000 every month for a ₹5,453 upgrade. That's the more expensive mistake by far.
Both come from picking a plan by vibe instead of by crossover. The fix is the same: know your monthly card volume, know your gateway, and re-check the crossover every quarter as you grow. It takes ten minutes and it's usually the highest-ROI ten minutes in your platform stack.
What's next
If you'd rather not run the crossover yourself — or you're changing plans as part of a build, migration, or performance sprint and want the plan choice folded into the scope — I do this for D2C brands as a matter of course. My Shopify developer rates for India lay out transparent fixed pricing for setup, migration, and retainer work, plan advice included. Or tell me your monthly revenue, gateway, and average order value on the /start intake and I'll tell you the plan the maths actually supports — not the one that sounds impressive.

Frequently asked questions
Is Shopify Advanced worth it for an Indian D2C brand?
Advanced is worth it once the lower card-processing rate and 0.5% platform fee save you more each month than the jump in subscription price over the Shopify plan. For most Indian D2C brands on Shopify Payments that crossover lands somewhere in the ₹15–25 lakh/month revenue range. Below that, you are paying for the higher tier without earning back the difference. Run the maths on your own volume. What is the difference between Shopify Basic and Advanced in India?
Price and processing rate, mostly. Basic runs about ₹1,994/mo with a higher card rate and a 2% platform fee on third-party gateways; Advanced runs about ₹30,164/mo with the lowest card rate and a 0.5% platform fee. Advanced also adds deeper analytics, more staff accounts, and calculated-carrier shipping. As of 2026 — verify on Shopify India. When should I upgrade from Basic to the Shopify plan in India?
Upgrade when the card-rate saving on your monthly volume exceeds the roughly ₹5,450/mo price gap between Basic and the Shopify plan. On Shopify Payments, that crossover typically sits in the low-to-mid lakhs of monthly revenue. If you use a third-party gateway, the 2% versus 1% platform fee tips it even sooner. Calculate it against your own card volume, not a rule of thumb.Does using Shopify Payments change which plan I should pick?
Heavily. Shopify Payments removes the platform transaction fee entirely, so the only tier difference left is the card-processing rate. That pushes the upgrade crossovers to higher revenue. On a third-party gateway you also pay 2% / 1% / 0.5% by tier, which makes upgrading pay off at much lower volume. Always model both scenarios before choosing. Can I start on Advanced and downgrade later?
You can change plans in either direction from your Shopify admin, so starting high and downgrading is possible — but it is almost always the wrong move. You pay Advanced money before your volume earns it back. Start on Basic, watch your monthly card volume, and upgrade the month the crossover maths turns positive. Overpaying early is not a growth strategy.Do I need Advanced for the analytics or the staff accounts?
Rarely, on their own. The Advanced report builder and extra staff seats are genuinely useful, but for most Indian D2C brands they are a nice-to-have, not the reason to jump two tiers. The upgrade should be driven by the processing-rate saving on your volume; better analytics and more seats are a bonus you collect once the fee maths already justifies the move. How much revenue before Shopify Advanced pays for itself in India?
On Shopify Payments, the Advanced-over-Shopify crossover for most Indian D2C brands sits around ₹15–25 lakh/month, because you are only recovering a small card-rate delta. On a third-party gateway the 1% to 0.5% platform-fee drop makes Advanced pay off far earlier. As of 2026 — model it on your exact card volume and gateway before deciding.
