Shopify developer cost in Australia (2026): hourly, day and project rates
A senior Shopify developer in Australia runs $65–150 an hour, with agency retainers at $4,000–11,000 a month and custom builds from $15,000. Here is the honest breakdown by hourly, day and project rate — and why the India time zone suits Australian brands better than any other offshore market.

The short answer
- A senior Shopify developer in Australia costs roughly $65–150 USD an hour (about AU$99–228 at AU$1.52 to the dollar).
- An Australian agency retainer runs $4,000–11,000 a month; a custom build starts near $15,000 and climbs past $55,000.
- Hiring a senior developer direct from India costs $25–60 an hour for the same seniority — a 50–70% saving.
- Sydney and Melbourne run only 4.5–5.5 hours ahead of India and Perth just 2.5, so Australian brands get real live overlap rather than overnight handoff.
- Australia has one of the highest Shopify adoption rates per capita, which raises local agency demand rather than lowering it.

A senior Shopify developer in Australia costs roughly $65–150 USD an hour — about AU$99–228 — with agency retainers at $4,000–11,000 a month and custom builds starting near $15,000 and climbing past $55,000. Mid-level freelancers sit lower. Australian D2C brands increasingly hire senior developers direct from India for 50–70% less at the same seniority, and the time zone suits Australia better than any other offshore pairing.
I am a senior Shopify developer based in Delhi, India, and I build for D2C brands in Australia, the US, the UK and the UAE. So I sit on one side of this comparison — read it accordingly. What follows is the honest version: what the Australian market charges, what you get at each price, and where hiring across the gap genuinely works.
What does a Shopify developer cost in Australia in 2026?
Here is the market in USD so it is comparable across borders, with approximate Australian dollars at AU$1.52 to the US dollar. Check today's rate before budgeting.
| Engagement | Rate (USD) | Approx. AUD |
|---|---|---|
| Senior freelance / contractor, hourly | $65–150 | AU$99–228 |
| Mid-level freelance, hourly | $35–75 | AU$53–114 |
| Agency retainer, monthly | $4,000–11,000 | AU$6,080–16,720 |
| Custom theme build | $15,000–55,000+ | AU$22,800–83,600+ |
| In-house senior developer, annual | — | AU$120,000–170,000 |
The in-house line is the one most brands underestimate. The salary is not the cost: superannuation, leave loading, equipment, and the overhead of keeping one specialist busy across a whole year typically add 25–30% on top, which puts a senior in-house Shopify developer near AU$150,000–220,000 fully loaded.
Why is Australian Shopify talent expensive?
Two forces, pulling the same direction.
Australian wages are high across the board — that part is structural and applies to every technical role. What is specific to this market is that Australia has one of the highest Shopify adoption rates per capita in the world. An enormous share of Australian D2C runs on Shopify, which means domestic demand for people who genuinely know Liquid, theme architecture and Core Web Vitals consistently outruns the supply of them.
Agencies in Sydney and Melbourne compete for the same thin senior pool, and they price against local salary benchmarks. Strong platform adoption makes Shopify expertise easier to find in Australia than in most markets. It does not make it cheaper.
Hourly, day, or project — which number should you compare?
Comparing hourly rates between vendors is the most common budgeting mistake, because the hourly rate says nothing about how many hours the job takes. A $140-an-hour senior who ships in 40 hours costs less than a $70-an-hour mid-level who takes 120 and needs rework.
Fixed-scope project pricing is what most D2C brands should want. A written scope, a fixed number, and a definition of done move the risk of inefficiency onto the developer. Someone quoting fixed is betting on their own speed; someone billing hourly has no such incentive.
Use hourly only where the work is genuinely open-ended — an ongoing optimisation retainer, or exploratory work nobody can scope yet.
Agency vs freelance vs offshore for an Australian brand
| Route | Typical cost | What you get | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Australian agency | $15,000–55,000+ build | Team, project manager, senior + junior mix | Parallel workstreams, procurement requirements |
| Australian senior freelancer | $65–150/hr | Senior hours, one accountable owner | Defined projects, brands under AU$8M |
| Marketplace gig | $12–35/hr | Unverifiable, high variance | Single tiny tasks, low stakes |
| Senior developer, direct from India | $25–60/hr | Senior hours end to end, one owner | Brands wanting senior output without the agency layer |
The agency premium is real and sometimes right. You are buying parallel capacity, a project manager, and an entity that survives one person leaving. If you need design and development running at once against a fixed launch date, or procurement requires a corporate contract, pay it.
What most Australian D2C brands under roughly AU$8M actually need is one senior person who owns the whole build — in which case the premium is largely buying a coordination layer around a junior doing the work.
The time zone is Australia's advantage, not its obstacle
This is where Australian brands have a genuinely better deal than American or British ones, and it is worth being specific.
| Your city | Hours ahead of India | What it feels like |
|---|---|---|
| Perth (AWST) | 2.5 | Effectively the same working day |
| Brisbane (AEST) | 4.5 | Your afternoon is my morning |
| Sydney / Melbourne | 4.5–5.5 | Several hours of live overlap daily |
Compare that to a US client, where the gap is 9.5 to 13.5 hours and the only workable pattern is overnight delivery. For an Australian brand, your afternoon is my morning. A 2pm Sydney call is a 9:30am call for me. You can get same-day answers, review a staging URL while I am still at my desk, and resolve a scoping question in an hour instead of a day.
That changes what is practical. Live debugging during a launch, a same-day hotfix when checkout breaks at 4pm, a working session on a tricky Liquid problem — all of these are normal with Australia in a way they are not with North America. It is the closest an offshore arrangement gets to hiring locally. I go into the working patterns in offshore Shopify developer time zones.
What I charge Australian brands

| Custom theme build | $15,000–55,000+ | $1,800–9,500 |
| Shopify Plus build | $30,000–110,000+ | $6,000–14,000 |

Does the price gap mean a quality gap?
The gap predicts cost of living, not quality. What predicts quality is what it predicts in Melbourne: seniority, a verifiable portfolio, and whether the person can explain their decisions when you push on them.
Verify exactly as you would verify a local hire.
- Named brands with live URLs, not screenshots you cannot check.
- Specific scope per project. "Custom theme" tells you nothing; "custom theme, Klaviyo integration, Core Web Vitals to 90+ on mobile" tells you everything.
- Numeric outcomes. Mine include Mahina at +28% AOV and Bloom at +22% month-on-month revenue, and a Mum & You migration that held its rankings through cutover with no indexation drop.
- Verifiable third-party status via the Shopify Partner Directory, rather than a badge on a website.
- Their actual writing. Three long-form posts will tell you whether someone understands the platform or just sells against it.
A vendor who cannot produce all five is a risk at any price.
A worked example: the same Australian store, two ways
A Melbourne apparel brand at roughly AU$500,000 a month needs a custom theme, a Klaviyo integration, a returns flow, and mobile Core Web Vitals fixed.
Australian agency route. Discovery AU$10,000. Design and build AU$52,000. Three-month post-launch retainer at AU$8,000 a month. Around AU$86,000, with a project manager between you and the person writing the code.
Direct senior route. The same scope quoted fixed at $7,500 USD, roughly AU$11,400, with a $700-a-month retainer after launch. Around AU$14,600 across the first six months.
The difference is an agency layer, an Australian salary benchmark, and a currency — not the quality of the Liquid.
Contracting and paying from Australia
- Pay in USD by wire, Wise, or Payoneer. The latter two are usually cheaper and faster than a bank wire.
- Pay against milestones, not hours: a deposit, one or two progress payments tied to demonstrable work, a final payment on handover.
- Get IP assignment in writing before the first invoice — code, theme files, and repository access on final payment.
- Ask for a paid trial task, $300–500 of real scoped work, before committing to a full build. It tells you more than any call and costs less than a bad hire.
- Confirm how GST applies to imported services with your accountant. It depends on your registration and turnover.
What running Shopify costs on top of the developer
The developer is one line of several. Your Shopify plan, apps, payment processing and shipping all sit alongside it, and app stacks in particular reach several hundred dollars a month without anyone deciding to spend it. The mechanics are the same in every market — I break the full stack down in the hidden costs of running a Shopify store.
So which route should an Australian brand choose?
- Under AU$8M with a definable project? A senior developer who owns the whole build, hired direct. The time zone makes this easier for you than for almost anyone else.
- Parallel design and development against a hard launch, or a corporate contract for procurement? An Australian agency earns its premium.
- One small, tightly-scoped task? A marketplace freelancer is fine if the stakes match the vetting.
- Constant year-round development demand? An in-house hire starts to make sense, at AU$150,000–220,000 fully loaded.
What's next
If you are an Australian D2C brand working out what a Shopify build should cost, the hire a Shopify developer page sets out how I work: senior hours end to end, fixed pricing published in USD, named case studies, IP assigned to you, and a call link in your afternoon.
Or skip ahead — tell me your revenue, catalogue and what you are building on the start page, and I will send back an honest fixed number, and say plainly if an Australian agency is the better fit.

An Australian agency retainer runs $4,000–11,000 a month, and a custom theme build generally starts near $15,000 and can pass $55,000 for a large catalogue or Shopify Plus scope. Is it cheaper to hire a Shopify developer outside Australia?
Yes, substantially. A senior Shopify developer in India charges $25–60 an hour against $65–150 in Australia for comparable seniority, a 50–70% saving. The difference is cost of living and the absence of an agency layer, not the quality of the work. What is the time difference between Australia and India for development work?
Sydney and Melbourne run 4.5 to 5.5 hours ahead of India depending on daylight saving, Brisbane 4.5, and Perth just 2.5. That is the smallest gap of any major offshore pairing for Australian brands — your afternoon is my morning, so several hours of genuine live overlap are available every working day rather than an overnight handoff. Why are Shopify developers expensive in Australia?

Agencies price against local salary benchmarks in Sydney and Melbourne, and a thin senior talent pool keeps those benchmarks climbing. Will I own the code if I hire a developer outside Australia?
Yes, when the contract says so — and it should. A professional arrangement assigns all code, theme files and intellectual property to you on final payment, with repository and store access handed over.
