At what revenue does Shopify Plus make sense in India?

Shopify Plus starts around ₹1.9–2 lakh a month in India. For most brands the revenue threshold is roughly ₹15–20 crore a year — but revenue is the wrong first question. Here is the honest signals-and-cost breakdown, and what to try before you upgrade.

At what revenue does Shopify Plus make sense in India?

Shopify Plus in India costs roughly ₹1.9–2 lakh a month (from about $2,300/mo), so the honest revenue threshold is around ₹15–20 crore a year — the point where the fee becomes a rounding error against sales. But revenue is the wrong first question. Plus is bought for specific capabilities, not for a badge, and plenty of ₹5 crore brands need it while some ₹30 crore brands do not.

I am a senior Shopify developer based in Delhi, and I build and migrate stores on both Advanced and Plus for D2C brands in India and abroad. I have talked brands into Plus when a real need justified it, and talked more of them out of it when what they actually needed was a faster theme and better checkout — not a ₹22 lakh-a-year plan.

What does Shopify Plus actually cost in India?

Plus is not on the standard India pricing page. It is quoted by Shopify sales, billed in USD, and starts around $2,300 per month — roughly ₹1.9–2 lakh per month at 2026 exchange rates (USD ≈ INR/83). Very high-volume merchants sometimes move to a revenue-share model instead of the flat fee. As of 2026, verify the current number directly on shopify.com, because Plus pricing moves and is not fixed to a public India page.

Here is how that sits against the plans below it:

PlanMonthly (INR)Monthly (USD)Annual cost (INR)
Shopify₹7,447 (₹5,599 annual)~$90~₹67,000–89,000
Advanced₹30,164 (₹22,680 annual)~$363~₹2.7–3.6 lakh
Plus~₹1.9–2 lakhfrom ~$2,300~₹22–24 lakh

Plus costs roughly 6–8× Advanced. That multiple is the whole decision: you are not paying a little more, you are paying an order of magnitude more, so the value has to be an order of magnitude clearer. Plan pricing shifts, so cross-check against the current Shopify pricing plans in India before you budget.

So at what revenue does the maths actually work?

Revenue matters because it decides whether the fee is trivial or painful. The Plus cost is fixed at roughly ₹22–24 lakh a year, so as your revenue grows, that fee shrinks as a percentage of sales.

Annual revenue (INR)Plus cost as % of revenueVerdict on cost alone
₹5 crore~4.5%Hard to justify unless a Plus feature drives it
₹10 crore~2.3%Borderline — needs a clear payback
₹15 crore~1.5%Comfortable if features earn their keep
₹20 crore~1.2%Easy to justify
₹40 crore+under 0.6%A rounding error

Around ₹15–20 crore in annual revenue is where the fee stops being a line item you argue about. Below ₹10 crore, Plus has to be paying for itself through a specific capability — B2B, custom checkout, international — because the raw cost is 2–4% of your sales. Above ₹20 crore, the cost basically disappears and the only question left is whether the features help.

But I want to be blunt about this: revenue is a proxy, not the trigger. I have built Plus stores for brands under ₹8 crore because they had a genuine wholesale business that needed B2B, and I have kept ₹25 crore DTC brands happily on Advanced because they sold a simple catalogue to retail customers and never touched a Plus-only feature. Use the revenue table to sanity-check affordability. Use the signals below to actually decide.

What are the real signals you need Plus?

Plus is a capability upgrade, not a scale upgrade. Here are the concrete triggers, in the order I see them matter for Indian D2C brands:

1. You need to customize checkout. This is the single most common real reason. On Advanced you can brand the checkout and add a few apps, but you cannot script logic into it. The moment you need conditional shipping, a free-gift threshold, re-ordered fields, upsells at the payment step, or hard business rules at checkout, you need Plus checkout extensibility and Functions. See Shopify checkout customization on Plus for what actually becomes possible.

2. You are running a real B2B or wholesale line. If retailers or distributors are placing bulk orders, you want Plus B2B — customer-specific catalogues, price lists, net terms, and a separate wholesale experience — not a bolted-on app. This is where Shopify Plus B2B and wholesale usually justifies the whole plan on its own.

3. You are selling into multiple regions. Running India plus the US, UK, or UAE with local pricing, currencies, and domains is what Shopify Markets on Plus is built for. If you are expanding internationally from India, the multi-region setup is a Plus-shaped problem.

4. You need multiple storefronts. Plus includes up to ten stores under one contract — useful for separate brands, regional stores, or a distinct B2B storefront. If you are paying for two or three separate Shopify plans today, the Plus math changes.

5. You are hitting operational ceilings. Higher API rate limits, more staff accounts, Launchpad for scheduled sales, and heavier automation through Flow — these matter when your team and your traffic outgrow Advanced. A big festive sale with flash-sale automation is a classic Plus use case.

If two or more of these are true and you are past roughly ₹10 crore, Plus is likely the right move. If none are true, no revenue number should push you onto it — you would be paying ₹22 lakh a year for headroom you never use.

What does Plus give you that Advanced doesn't?

To make the trade explicit, here is the capability gap, not just the price gap:

CapabilityAdvancedPlus
Transaction fee (3rd-party gateway)~0.5%Lower / negotiated

Shopify Markets (multi-region)BasicFull

The line that pays for Plus for most brands is checkout customization and Functions. Everything you cannot do at checkout on Advanced — and there is a lot — becomes possible on Plus. If you want to see what Functions unlock in practice, Shopify Functions examples walks through real ones. For the fuller decision framework, when to upgrade to Shopify Plus is the companion piece to this post.

What should you try before upgrading?

Most brands that ask me about Plus do not actually have a Plus problem yet. They have a conversion problem, a speed problem, or a checkout-friction problem that they have decided Plus will fix. Sometimes it will. Often a much cheaper fix will. Before you commit ₹22–24 lakh a year, exhaust Advanced deliberately:

  1. Fix speed and Core Web Vitals first. A slow store leaks revenue at every plan tier, and Plus does nothing for it. If your store drags, that is a build problem, and slow store and Core Web Vitals is where to start — not the upgrade button.

  2. Fix conversion on the store you have. If the store is not converting, Plus features rarely rescue it. Work through why your Shopify store isn't converting and see how much of the gap is CRO, not plan.

  3. Solve checkout friction with apps where you can. Some of what feels Plus-only — upsells, bundles, subscriptions — has app solutions on Advanced. Reserve Plus for logic you genuinely cannot buy off the shelf.

  4. Pressure-test the real blocker. Ask: is the thing stopping me a plan limit, or a build limit? A plan limit is a Shopify wall you cannot code around. A build limit is a theme or app decision you can. Most "I need Plus" moments are the second kind.

If you work through all four and the blocker is still a hard Plus-only wall — custom checkout logic, native B2B, multi-region, multi-store — then Plus is the right call, and it will pay for itself. If you cannot name a specific wall, you are not ready, no matter what your revenue is.

How I price Plus work in India

If you do move to Plus, the plan fee is only part of the cost — the build is the other part. Here is what I charge for Plus work in India:

EngagementPrice (INR)Price (USD)
Plus custom theme (Functions + Flow)₹5,00,000 – ₹8,00,000$6,000 – $9,500
Full Plus stack (Wholesale + Markets)₹8,00,000 – ₹12,00,000$9,500 – $14,000
Plus migration (from another platform)₹4,00,000 – ₹8,00,000$5,000 – $9,500
Shopify Functions engagement₹1,50,000 – ₹4,00,000$1,800 – $4,800
Plus retainer₹65,000 – ₹1,20,000/mo$775 – $1,450/mo

The honest framing: budget for the plan fee and a proper build, because Plus features you never implement are just an expensive Advanced plan. A brand paying ₹2 lakh a month for Plus but running a stock checkout and no Functions is wasting the entire premium. The value is in what you build on top of it — which is exactly why revenue alone should never be the trigger.

The one-line answer

If you want a single sentence to carry away: Shopify Plus makes sense in India when a specific capability — custom checkout, native B2B, multi-region, or multi-store — is worth more to you than ₹22–24 lakh a year, and revenue is usually only high enough to make that trade painless past ₹15–20 crore. Everything else is a badge, and the badge is not worth ₹2 lakh a month.

What's next

If you are weighing Advanced versus Plus and want an honest read on whether you actually need it, the Shopify Plus developer page lays out how I build on Plus — Functions, Flow, B2B, and Markets, with transparent fixed pricing and no agency layer. Better yet, tell me about your project on /start: your revenue, your catalogue, and the specific wall you are hitting, and I will tell you plainly whether Plus is worth it for you or whether Advanced plus a proper build gets you there for a fraction of the cost.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

  • At what revenue does Shopify Plus make sense in India?

There is no hard cutoff, but a useful rule of thumb is roughly ₹15–20 crore in annual revenue, where the Plus fee stops being a meaningful percentage of sales. Below that, revenue matters less than specific needs — checkout customization, B2B, multiple stores, or high order volume. If none of those apply, Advanced is usually enough.
  • How much does Shopify Plus cost in India in 2026?

Shopify Plus starts around $2,300 per month, which is roughly ₹1.9–2 lakh per month at 2026 exchange rates, billed in USD. Very high-volume merchants may move to revenue-share pricing instead. Verify the current figure on shopify.com, since Plus pricing is quoted by Shopify sales rather than published on a fixed India page.
  • Is Shopify Plus worth it for an Indian D2C brand?

It is worth it when a concrete need pays for it — checkout customization, wholesale B2B, multiple regional stores, or order volume that strains Advanced. It is not worth it as a status upgrade. If you are on Advanced and hitting real ceilings, Plus pays for itself. If you are chasing the badge, you are burning roughly ₹22–24 lakh a year for nothing.
  • What is the difference between Shopify Advanced and Shopify Plus?

Advanced (around ₹30,164 per month) gives you lower transaction fees, advanced reports, and up to five staff accounts. Plus adds checkout customization, the Functions and Flow automation stack, B2B/wholesale, Shopify Markets for multiple regions, up to ten stores, and higher API limits. The jump is about capability and control, not just scale.
  • Can I customize Shopify checkout without Plus?

Only in limited ways. On non-Plus plans you can adjust branding, add a few checkout apps, and use standard settings, but you cannot deeply script checkout logic. Custom checkout — conditional shipping, gifting rules, re-ordered fields, hard business logic at the payment step — is a Plus-only capability through checkout extensibility and Functions.
  • How much revenue do I need before Shopify Plus pays for itself?

At around ₹15–20 crore a year, the roughly ₹22–24 lakh annual Plus cost is about 1–1.5% of revenue, which is easy to justify if Plus features lift conversion or unlock B2B. Below ₹10 crore, the same fee is 2–3%+ of sales, so it only makes sense if a specific Plus capability is directly driving that revenue.
  • What should I try before upgrading to Shopify Plus?

Fix conversion and speed on Advanced first, use apps for subscriptions and bundling, and pressure-test whether your real blocker is a plan limit or a build problem. Many brands that think they need Plus actually need a faster theme and better CRO. Exhaust Advanced deliberately before spending ₹22–24 lakh a year.
