Klaviyo vs Omnisend vs Mailchimp for Shopify (India)
A senior Shopify developer's honest comparison of Klaviyo, Omnisend, and Mailchimp for Indian D2C brands — pricing, deliverability, flows, WhatsApp, and which one fits your stage.

For most Indian D2C brands on Shopify, Klaviyo is the best email platform once you are past your first few lakh in monthly revenue, Omnisend is the smarter value while you are small, and Mailchimp only makes sense if you are already stuck on it. Pick by revenue stage and how much segmentation you need — not by the brand name everyone recommends.
I am a senior Shopify developer based in Delhi, and I set up the email and flow stack on most D2C builds and retainers I take. So I have configured all three of these tools on real Indian stores, watched what actually drives repeat revenue, and cleaned up the migrations when brands picked wrong. This is the honest comparison.
The short answer, by stage
Email is the highest-ROI channel a D2C brand owns, and the platform you pick shapes how far you can push it. Here is how I map the three tools to where a brand actually is:
| Stage (monthly revenue) | My pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-launch to ~₹5L | Omnisend | Cheapest path to real e-commerce flows; generous free tier |
| ~₹5L to ~₹20L | Klaviyo | Segmentation and Shopify data model pay for themselves here |
| ~₹20L+ / Plus | Klaviyo | Predictive analytics, deep flows, and integrations scale with you |
| Already on Mailchimp, not ready to move | Mailchimp | Works, but plan a migration when you have bandwidth |
The mistake I see most is a two-crore brand still limping along on Mailchimp because switching feels like a project, and a bootstrapped founder paying for Klaviyo they are nowhere near using fully. Both are paying for the wrong tool for their stage.
What does each one actually cost in India?
None of these three bill in rupees. Klaviyo, Omnisend, and Mailchimp all price in USD by contact count and monthly send volume, so your bill in India tracks the same global tiers at whatever the exchange rate is that month (USD is roughly ₹83 as I write this — verify current pricing on each vendor's site, since all three change tiers regularly).
Here is the rough shape of it. Treat these as directional, not quotes:
| Platform | Free tier | Entry paid (~1,000 contacts) | Billing model |
|---|---|---|---|
| Omnisend | Up to ~250 contacts / ~500 emails | Contacts + sends; SMS/WhatsApp metered | |
| Klaviyo | Up to ~250 contacts / ~500 emails | Contacts; SMS metered separately | |
| Mailchimp | Up to ~500 contacts (limited) | Contacts + feature tier |
The catch nobody tells you: all three get expensive as your list grows, and Klaviyo is the steepest curve. A 50,000-contact list can run well over $700–1,000/mo on Klaviyo. That is fine when email is driving 25% of your revenue and paying for itself many times over. It is painful when you are paying for a bloated list of dead contacts you never clean. List hygiene is a cost lever, not just a deliverability one — something a lot of Indian brands miss.

Which one has the best flows for Indian D2C?
This is where the real difference lives, and it is not about email design — it is about how each tool models your customer data and lets you trigger on it.
Klaviyo treats every Shopify event as a first-class signal. You can build a flow that fires when someone views a product three times without buying, segment by predicted customer lifetime value, or split a post-purchase flow by whether it was a first or repeat order. For an Indian D2C brand with a real repeat-buyer base — skincare, supplements, coffee, apparel with restocks — that granularity is the difference between a generic newsletter and a machine that pulls people back. Its flow builder is the best of the three, full stop.
Omnisend covers the flows that matter — welcome, abandoned cart, browse abandonment, post-purchase, win-back — with less setup friction and a gentler learning curve. You give up the deep predictive segmentation, but a lean brand does not need it yet. For a founder wiring their first automations without a specialist, Omnisend gets you to "revenue from email" faster.
Mailchimp does automations, but its Shopify integration has been second-class since the two companies fell out years ago. Data syncs less cleanly, the e-commerce triggers are shallower, and you spend more time fighting the tool. It is a capable general email platform that happens to be a mediocre Shopify one.
The core flows every Indian D2C store should have running from day one, regardless of tool:
- Welcome / first-purchase nudge — capture the email, deliver the discount, set expectations.
- Abandoned checkout — the single highest-revenue flow; pair it with WhatsApp for the Indian market (more on that below).
- Browse abandonment — softer than cart, catches the top of the funnel.
- Post-purchase — thank, cross-sell, and set up the review request.
- Win-back — re-engage lapsed buyers before you pay to re-acquire them.
If those five are not live, the platform is not your problem. Your abandoned-cart flow alone should recover real revenue — and if your store leaks conversions before the email even fires, that is a different fix, which I cover in why your Shopify store isn't converting and abandoned cart automation for India.
What about deliverability?
Founders obsess over which tool "has better deliverability." The honest answer: the platform matters far less than your own setup. All three land in the inbox fine if you do the boring work, and all three land in spam if you do not.
The things that actually control whether your emails reach Gmail and Outlook inboxes in India:
- Domain authentication. SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records on your sending domain. This is non-negotiable in 2026 — Gmail and Yahoo now enforce it for bulk senders. Every tool supports it; most brands set it up wrong or not at all.
- A dedicated sending subdomain. Send from
mail.yourbrand.com, not your root domain, so a bad campaign never poisons your transactional email. - List hygiene. Sending to dead addresses tanks your sender reputation. Suppress non-openers, sunset the truly dead, and never buy a list.
- Warm-up. A new domain blasting 40,000 emails on day one gets flagged. Ramp volume gradually.
Get those right and Omnisend, Klaviyo, and Mailchimp all deliver comparably. Get them wrong and no platform saves you. This is exactly the kind of configuration I handle on a build so it is done once, correctly — it sits alongside the GA4 and tracking setup most brands also get wrong.
What about WhatsApp and SMS in India?
Here is where the global tools show their blind spot. In India, WhatsApp is not a nice-to-have — for many D2C brands it out-converts email, especially for abandoned cart and order updates. But WhatsApp is a regulated, template-driven channel, and the strongest tooling for it is local.
My honest guidance: do not expect your email platform to be your WhatsApp platform. Omnisend and Klaviyo both offer WhatsApp sending (native or via partners), and it is improving, but most serious Indian brands I work with route WhatsApp through a dedicated BSP — Wati, Interakt, AiSensy, or similar — that handles the Meta template approvals, opt-ins, and Indian pricing properly. You then integrate that with your email flows so the two channels coordinate instead of double-messaging.
SMS carries its own India-specific rule: DLT registration with TRAI is mandatory, and you almost always route transactional and promotional SMS through a local aggregator rather than the email tool's built-in US-centric SMS. Klaviyo and Omnisend both meter SMS separately and in USD, which rarely makes sense for Indian volumes.
| Channel | Best-fit tool for India | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Klaviyo or Omnisend | Core channel; platform choice matters most here | |
| Local BSP (Wati / Interakt / AiSensy) | Integrate with email; don't rely on the email tool alone | |
| SMS | Local aggregator (DLT-registered) | Mandatory DLT; global tool SMS rarely cost-effective |
So the real Indian D2C stack is usually Klaviyo or Omnisend for email, plus a local WhatsApp BSP, wired together. I go deeper on the WhatsApp side in WhatsApp commerce for Indian D2C.
Klaviyo vs Omnisend: the head-to-head that actually matters
Mailchimp is usually a legacy decision, so the live choice for most new Indian brands is Klaviyo versus Omnisend. Here is how I decide on a real project:
- Choose Omnisend if you are early, budget-conscious, running the marketing yourself, and want the essential flows live this week without a specialist. It is genuinely good software, not a downgrade.
- Choose Klaviyo if segmentation is or will soon be your growth lever — you have a repeat-purchase product, a list worth slicing, and you want predictive analytics and the deepest Shopify integration on the market. Nearly every brand I take past ₹15–20L/month is on Klaviyo, and it earns its higher bill.
The switching cost is real but not scary: contacts, flows, and templates all migrate, though you rebuild flows rather than lift-and-shift them. Do it when segmentation becomes your bottleneck, not on a whim. And do it once — thrashing between platforms every year burns more money than staying on the slightly-less-ideal tool.
Common mistakes I fix on Indian stores
The pattern repeats across brands:
- Buying Klaviyo, using it like Mailchimp. Paying premium for segmentation you never configure. If your Klaviyo flows are just a welcome and an abandoned cart, Omnisend would have cost you less for the same result.
- Never cleaning the list. Paying for tens of thousands of contacts who last opened an email in 2024, while their dead engagement drags your deliverability down. Double waste.
- No domain authentication. The single most common reason "email doesn't work" for a brand — it is quietly landing in spam.
- Treating WhatsApp as an afterthought. In India this is leaving the highest-converting channel on the table.
- Switching tools to fix a flows problem. A migration will not lift email revenue if the underlying flows and segments are thin. Fix the strategy, then the tool.
The tool is maybe 20% of the outcome. The flows, segments, deliverability, and channel mix are the other 80% — and that is the part worth investing in.
What's next
If you are launching or rebuilding a Shopify store and want the email, WhatsApp, and flow stack set up properly from day one — the right platform for your stage, clean deliverability, and flows that actually recover revenue — that is core to what I do. See how I work on the Shopify developer in Delhi page, or tell me your revenue, list size, and current tool on /start and I will give you an honest recommendation, even if it is "stay on what you have."

Frequently asked questions
Which email platform is best for a Shopify store in India?
For most Indian D2C brands past their first ₹5–10 lakh in monthly revenue, Klaviyo is the best fit because its segmentation and flow builder are built for Shopify data. For a brand just starting out on a tight budget, Omnisend is the better value, and Mailchimp only makes sense if you are already locked into it. Pick by revenue stage, not brand name. How much does Klaviyo cost in India?
Klaviyo is billed in USD by contact count and monthly send volume, so your cost in India tracks the same tiers as US brands at the current exchange rate. It is free up to roughly 250 contacts, then scales by list size — expect a few thousand rupees a month at a few thousand contacts, rising steeply as your list grows. Always check klaviyo.com for live pricing.Does Klaviyo, Omnisend, or Mailchimp support WhatsApp for Indian brands?
Omnisend and Klaviyo both offer native or partner WhatsApp sending, but for the Indian market most serious brands run WhatsApp through a dedicated local BSP such as Wati, Interakt, or AiSensy rather than the email tool. Mailchimp has the weakest WhatsApp story. Treat WhatsApp as a separate channel and integrate it with your email platform rather than expecting one tool to do both well.Is Mailchimp still good for Shopify in 2026?
Mailchimp lost its deep native Shopify integration years ago and has never fully recovered it. It works, but its e-commerce automations and Shopify data sync lag well behind Klaviyo and Omnisend. In 2026 I only recommend Mailchimp to Indian brands already invested in it who are not ready to migrate. For a new Shopify store, start with Klaviyo or Omnisend instead. When should I switch from Omnisend to Klaviyo?
Switch when segmentation becomes your bottleneck — when you want to trigger flows on predicted lifetime value, browse behaviour, or granular purchase history and Omnisend's simpler model gets in the way. That is usually somewhere past ₹15–25 lakh in monthly revenue with a growing repeat-buyer base. Below that, Omnisend does everything a lean D2C brand needs at a lower cost. How much of my Shopify revenue should come from email?
For a healthy Indian D2C brand, email and owned channels together should drive roughly 20–30% of revenue once your flows are mature. If email is under 10%, the problem is almost never the tool — it is missing flows, a small list, or poor segmentation. Fix the flows before you switch platforms, because a migration alone will not lift a number that low.Do these email tools handle Indian deliverability and DLT for SMS?
Email deliverability depends on your domain authentication (SPF, DKIM, DMARC) far more than the platform, and all three support it. For SMS in India, DLT registration with TRAI is mandatory regardless of tool, and most brands route Indian SMS through a local aggregator rather than the email platform's built-in SMS. Plan SMS and WhatsApp as India-specific channels from the start. Can a Shopify developer set up Klaviyo flows for me?
Yes. Platform setup, Shopify data mapping, flow architecture, and deliverability configuration are exactly the kind of work I do on a build or retainer. The email tool is only as good as the flows and segments behind it, and getting those right is a developer-and-strategy job, not something the default templates handle well. It is a common line item on my D2C engagements.
